Colchester go nine games without a win as an early Scunthorpe goal gives the visitors all three points

Alfie Beestin netted with a fantastic finish after only five minutes to give Scunthorpe a 1-0 lead which they defended for the following 85, handing the visitors the win in an injury-ridden game.

The Beestin goal was far too easy from a Colchester perspective as the midfielder drove at the defence and let loose a fierce shot from 25 yards. The shot flew past Dean Gerken and into the back of the net leaving the Scunthorpe players ecstatic while the U’s manager slumped down into his seat in frustration.

There were three substitutions before the 20-minute mark with Colchester being forced to make a double change after 15 minutes when Ben Stevenson and goalkeeper Dean Gerken were both taken off after picking up knocks.

It was Scunthorpe’s turn next to be troubled with an injury as Jem Karacan couldn’t carry on following a previous incident where the midfielder had gone down hurting his arm. After a break in play, while the linesman was replaced due to an injury himself, the football continued, with no clear-cut chances falling for either team before half time.

Colchester were much better in the second half and the chance of the game fell to winger Callum Harriott who received the ball in space just inside the box. The winger touched the ball out in front of him and curled a vicious shot in at the goal, the shot rose just over the crossbar however and Harriott put his head in his hands knowing he had missed the home sides best opportunity of the game.

Even with Colchester throwing everything at the match in the last ten minutes, it was simply too little too late for the U’s who were handed yet another loss in the league leaving Steve ball’s men without a win in nine games and still on the hunt for their first win of 2021.
