Relegation threatened Wigan Athletic travel to fellow strugglers Northampton Town

Northampton Town welcome Wigan Athletic to the PTS Academy Stadium in League One on Saturday in what is a relegation six-pointer

Northampton have picked up a possible five points from their last five games and sit one point above the bottom four with a game in hand. They were held to a 0-0 draw by managerless Fleetwood in their last outing on Tuesday.

Wigan, on the other hand, have picked up six points from a possible 15, but a 5-0 defeat to Blackpool in midweek leaves them in 23rd. However, they are two points from safety and have played a game less than the teams around them.

With the January transfer window coming to an end, both teams have been very busy this window. Wigan have brought the likes of Zach Clough and Tendayi Darwika from Nottingham Forest in hope for survival this season. Current manager Leam Richardson also signed Funso Ojo on Thursday and could start at Sixfields tomorrow.

The Cobblers have already signed four so far with the possibility of Keith Curle further strengthening their squad before the deadline on February 1 . The most recent acquisition was wing-back Peter Kioso who joins on loan from Luton Town. He spent the first half of the season on loan at Bolton but the Hatters clearly wanted him to play at a higher level.

Victory for the visitors would see them leapfrog their opponents and could see them move out of the drop zone depending on results elsewhere. Meanwhile a win for Northampton would extend the gap between them and Wigan to five points and could move them as high as 17th in the League.

Team News

Northampton Town

New signing Mickel Miller is a doubt. The loanee pulled his hamstring on his debut for Northampton and is set to be sidelined for the next few weeks. Alan Sheehan and Jack Sowerby are also doubts for Curle’s side.

Wigan Athletic

Lee Evans and Gavin Massey are still unavailable and won’t feature on Saturday. Adam Long is also out with an ankle injury and will be sidelined for weeks.  Forward Kyle Joseph was left limping on Tuesday after having his ankle trodden on, and will be a doubt for the trip to the Midlands.
