Points shared between Colchester and Cambridge after Greg Taylor own goal

Cambridge missed out on going top of League Two as they struggled at the JobServe Community Stadium. The clash ended in a 1-1 draw with the horrible weather conditions playing a large part in the points being shared.

Having snowed all night, the pitch was almost at the stage of being waterlogged before the game, however, the match went ahead with a few puddles on the turf causing trouble for players.

Cambridge took the lead after only 12 minutes when Harvey Knibbs broke the deadlock. The ball was fed into Paul Mullin who lashed a shot on goal from a tight angle. Dean Gerken could do nothing more than parry the powerful strike into Knibbs’ path who wasn’t going to miss from two yards out.

The goal came against the run of play as this was the first real chance for Cambridge with Colchester dominating the opening stages.

After finding their feet in the game, Cambridge looked on top for the rest of the half, that was until Colchester nicked an equaliser in the 39th minute.

Mullin kicked out after Callum Harriott made a poor challenge on the forward and the two squared up on the edge of Colchester’s box with both players being booked for their troubles.

Harriott immediately redeemed himself, however, as from the resulting attack he fired a loose ball goal-bound which found the back of the net via a lucky deflection off Greg Taylor. The goal was later credited to be a Taylor own goal.

In a second half that was dry in terms of chances, the best opportunity fell to the League Two’s top goalscorer Mullin. The forward cut inside in the box and whipped his shot just wide of the post, an unlucky strike that would have crept in on any other day.

At the end of the game, both teams can reflect on a deserved point in a game that could’ve gone either way. Steve Ball will be the happier manager after the game as his team put in a determined performance that the fans have been looking for all season.
