Gustavo Hamer – The stats behind the Sky Blues dynamo and his season so far

Gustavo Hamer joined Coventry City from Eredivisie side PEC Zwolle during the summer and has been a revelation ever since joining up with the Sky Blues.

Coventry got promoted to the Championship at the end of last season and were in many people’s picks to go straight back down this season, but Mark Robins has got his players fired up and playing out of their skins as they look to maintain their Championship status. Something they look like doing as they currently sit 16th and seven points clear of the drop zone.

One key component to Coventry’s good start to life in the Championship was the signing of Hamer for a fee of around £1.35m, a fee that is proving to be a bargain so far.

The 23-year-old has become a real enforcer in the middle of the park for Robins’ side. His creativity along with his tenacity has made him a real fan-favourite.

On the attacking side of things, Hamer has so far contributed four goals and one assist this season but he has been a lot more productive than what the outright goals and assists show.

Despite being in a team predicted to be amongst the relegation places, Hamer has been the 6th most creative player in the Championship with an average of two key passes per game.

The central midfielder also averages a pass completion percentage of 73% which is a decent rate for a player who is the creative spark of the team as he plays more risky passes than others in the side.

Along with his remarkable creative stats, the Dutch midfielder averages 0.7 dribbles per game and is also fouled on average 1.1 times per game, these stats show just how crucial he is to the Coventry side.

As well as his attacking side of the game Hamer is a big contributor on the defensive side. The 23-year-old averages in the top five of the Coventry team for both Interceptions per game (1.8) and tackles per game (1.6), showing his worth at both ends of the pitch.

Coventry will be hoping the midfielder can keep up these performances to help guide them to another season in the Championship, which could be worth so much to the club.

With the stats that are backing up Hamer and his season so far with Coventry, it may not be too long before we see him operating in one of the top European leagues, which would be a huge loss for the Sky Blues.
