Plymouth Argyle stuns Championship opposition to progress into round four of the FA Cup

Plymouth Argyle knock out Championship opposition in Huddersfield Town to progress into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Terriers took the lead twice with an early header from Romoney Crichlow as well as a superb left-footed strike by Aaron Rowe’. However, Argyle refused to sit down and came back at the Yorkshire based team, goals from Ryan Hardie and Panutche Camara saw The Pilgrims level the scoreline.

Chances began to dry up as both sides were aware of the risk of going behind in the game. But just 20 minutes from time, Joe Edwards found himself free in the box to tap in Danny Mayor’s inviting cross. Edwards winning goal secured Argyle’s place in the fourth round, they last got to this stage of the competition just 12 years ago.

Ryan Lowe’s side currently find themselves 15th in League One, only the 26 places below Huddersfield in the Football League, they looked shy of a side in the bottom half of the league on this occasion as they continuous put Huddersfield under pressure all be it a second-string side.

Romoney Crichlow had put the hosts ahead within four minutes with a near-post glancing header from Patrick Jones’ inswinging corner. But 20 minutes later Plymouth equalised, Ryan Hardie was dispatched down the left-hand side where he unleashed a powerful low left-foot shot that was too strong for Hamer as it flew past the ex-Leicester goalkeeper at his front post.

Huddersfield, who made 11 changes from their previous game against Reading, quickly responded claiming back control of the tie when Aaron Rowe cut in from the right-hand side unleashing a stunning left-footed strike which arrowed its way into the top left corner of Michael Cooper’s goal.

But Argyle went in at halftime back on equal terms when Mayor sailed down the left before cutting the ball back for an oncoming Camara, who calmly finished with a right-footed from 12 yards. And Mayor was again involved in the winner as the 30-year old surged to the byline before picking out Edwards, who claimed the winning goal of the match.

Plymouth will be looking to take this result into the league and create some momentum in the coming weeks as they seek to climb the table, creating a gap between themselves and the bottom three. Plymouth fans will be glued to their televisions on Monday 11th as they see who awaits them in round four of the FA Cup.

As for Huddersfield, normal duties resume next week as they travel to high flying Watford with a fully-rested squad at their disposal.
