Vanarama National League weekend roundup – Torquay miss out on chance to increase their lead at the top

Torquay United missed a glorious chance to move eight points clear at the top of the Vanarama National League after dropping two points against struggling Kings Lynn Town on Saturday.

Torquay’s four-match winning run was brought to an end following a goalless draw at Kings Lynn. Despite Gulls captain Asa Hall receiving a straight red card in the 78th minute, Torquay held on for a point.

Michael Cheek scored the only goal of the game as Bromley moved up to third in the table with a 1-0 win at Solihull Moors. Cheek’s effort on the stroke of half-time sealed victory in a close game with few chances.

Sorba Thomas snatched a late winner at Meadow Park as Boreham Wood beat Aldershot Town 3-2.

Wood raced into a two-goal lead after 21 minutes after Kabongo Tshimanqa scored from the spot after twelve minutes before Gus Mafuta doubled the host’s advantage. The Shoots hit back when Shadrach Ogie fired home and an own goal drew the visitor’s level, only for Thomas to pop up late for the winner.

Akwasi Asante picked up a hat-trick as Chesterfield thumped Barnet 6-0 at the Technique Stadium.

Scott Boden, Hadyn Hollis and Jak McCourt added to the Spireites goal tally for the afternoon on a day Barnet will want to forget.

Wealdstone returned back to winning ways by breaking a five-game winless run after coming from behind to beat Weymouth 2-1 at Grosvenor Vale.

Ben Thomson opened the scoring in the 25th minute for the visitors before two goals either side of half time inside two minutes from Dennon Lewis and substitute Jack Cawley provided the perfect turnaround for the Stones as Weymouth slipped to their fourth successive defeat.

Jack Moult scored the only goal of the game to move Altrincham into the National League play-off places with a 1-0 victory at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Woking ended a spell of two successive defeats with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Hartlepool United at the Laithwaite Community Stadium.

Matt Jarvis fired the Cards into an early lead in the second minute. Centre half Jack Cook doubled the hosts advantage in the 17th minute as the Cards dominated the opening forty-five minutes.

Slavi Spasov netted in the 58th minute to put Woking on course for a comfortable win. The cards did have to play the last twenty minutes with ten men when Max Kretzschmar was shown a straight red card. However, Hartlepool rarely threatened a comeback with Woking cruising to victory.
