Gus Hamer stands out as Coventry cruise to 3-1 victory against Rotherham United

Tyler Walker was the main focal point of Coventry City’s attack as he scored and assisted all in the space of 12 minutes.

The Sky Blues extend their unbeaten run to five games with a 3-1 win against lackluster Rotherham United, who’s winless run continues.

The Millers started on the front foot, but that was quickly cut out in the fifth minute when Frenchman Max Biamou opened the scoring with a smart finish after Walker threaded an inch-perfect through ball, in virtually their first attack of the game.

Just seven minutes later, the home side doubled their lead with Walker scoring the goal. The 24-year-old was in the right place at the right time after Callum O’Hare hit the post.

Rotherham came knocking on the door with two poor headers being put over the bar before half time.

The away side struggled to match the tempo of Mark Robins’ side with midfield maestro Gustavo Hamer there every time to cut out any break in play or any misplaced passes.

Hamer, who was born in Brazil and raised in the Netherlands was everywhere and he ran the show for City. The holding midfielder’s phenomenal work rate and good attitude showed why the Coventry fans rate him so highly

The 23-year-old takes his goal contributions to five for the season, as he assisted the third goal for the home team.

Hamer had a number of free-kicks that he plunged dangerously into the box, one was finally successful when young on-loan Brighton defender Leo Ostigard scored with a powerful header in the 72nd minute.

The midfielder started the attack for the second goal with a smart free-kick to O’Hare who struck the post beforWalker scored his third of the season.

The Millers’ manager Paul Warne made full use of the five substitutes, but that couldn’t save his side from defeat.

The South Yorkshire outfit left it too late to make any realistic comeback, this has been quite the story this season

In the 85th minute, the ball was curled in and young Coventry goalkeeper Ben Wilson fouled Kyle Vassell which gave Rotherham a penalty as Daniel Barseler smashed the ball into the back of the net for a consolation goal.

It was not enough to gain any points and it was yet another miserable matchday for them. It is now six defeats in eight games for The Millers which is undoubtedly relegation form.

Warne was certainly disheartened by the defeat of his former teammate:

“It’s hugely disappointing, we came into this off the back off two decent performances, playing the new system. Robbo [Mark Robins] matched us up and, in fairness in every department they were superior to us – which hurts me to say.

The Coventry boss was certainly pleased with his sides resilient win:

“The three points was a big, big three points for us. From a confidence point of view, and the face that we’ve gone five games unbeaten, it’s very pleasing.”

Next up for Coventry is Luton Town at home on Tuesday night, whereas Rotherham face another tough away trip to Watford.
