Leicester City host Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League after a fantastic Europa League night

Leicester City will be looking for a win that could lift them to the top of the table, if only for a couple of hours when Wolverhampton Wanderers come to visit the East Midlands club.

Both teams are among the early front runners and Wolves themselves are only three points behind top of the league, but goal difference makes it unlikely that they would go top, with them needing a big win.

The sides have had very similar records in their opening seven games, both have suffered two defeats so far, with Leicester winning their other five, whereas Wolves have won four and drawn one of their remaining games.

Wolves’ recent league record makes for better reading with three wins, and a draw, in their last four games, but Leicester have won their last two league matches, and against strong opposition in Arsenal and Leeds. Leicester also come into this game on the back of a 4-0 win against Braga in the Europa League and have won their last five in all competitions.

Leicester’s recent form has been impressive and even more so considering their injury record with Wilfred Ndidi, Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans, Timothy Castagne, Daniel Amartey and Ricardo Pereira all out injured. Wolves do not have anywhere near as many injuries but do have Marcal and Jonny out injured.

Despite sitting second in the league coming into this round of fixtures, Leicester City’s home form has been poor, with one win and two defeats in their opening three home matches. Six of the nine goals the Foxes have conceded have come at the King Power, and they have scored just four goals in those games, compared to 13 goals in four away matches.

Jamie Vardy alone has scored nearly as many league goals so far as Wolves, with Vardy netting seven compared to Wolves’ eight. Raul Jimenez has scored half of those with four goals to his name.

Only Arsenal, though, have conceded fewer than Wolves’ eight, though Leicester are not far behind having conceded nine. Meanwhile, only Spurs have scored more goals than the Foxes this season.

While either of these sides could finish the day top of the league, the tight nature of the league means that both clubs could drop out of the European places with a defeat. Both Wolves and Leicester will be expected to finish the season in and around the European places, which makes this a key fixture for both sides.

Wolves narrowly missed out on qualifying for Europe last season, while Leicester City looked for the majority of the season like they would make the Champions League before dropping down to finish fifth in the table, and just three points ahead of tomorrow’s opposition.

The fixture is not one with a recent history of goals, with both games between the two sides last season finishing 0-0.
