Struggling Shrewsbury Town depleted for trip to high-flying Peterborough United

High-flying Peterborough United welcome struggling Shrewsbury Town to the Weston Homes Stadium tomorrow afternoon in Sky Bet League One.

Shrewsbury currently sit 21st in the league and are the lowest scoring team in the division so far having scored just five goals in eight games.

The Shrews have only conceded eight goals in those eight games, which is one of the better defensive records in the division, but their average of less than one goal scored per game means that has not been good enough to win them matches.

In fact, Sam Ricketts’ side have won just one game all season, a 1-0 win against Wimbledon four games ago.

Of their other seven games, Shrewsbury have drawn three and lost four. They have also failed to score more than one goal in any of their league fixtures this campaign.

Peterborough meanwhile have lost just two games, their opening two away games of the season, and before Tuesday night’s draw with Burton had won all their other fixtures.

The Posh are just three points behind leaders Lincoln City, and will hope to catch them with a win tomorrow, but overtaking them will be unlikely due to the goal difference swing that would be needed.

Peterborough are the division’s joint-fourth highest scorers to this point with 16 goals in nine games, five of which have come from former Bristol Rovers striker Jonson Clarke-Harris, who has stepped up to replace the missing goals of Ivan Toney.

Shrewsbury have boosted their side over the last couple of weeks with the signings of experienced former Bournemouth duo Charlie Daniels and Marc Pugh, but they could be short tomorrow with Leon Clarke and Jason Cummings both expected to miss out. Shaun Whalley, Scott Golbourne, Dave Edwards, Dejan Iliev and Matija Sarkic also all remain on the sidelines for Salop.

Peterborough would be a tough match for any side in League One, as they’ve shown so far this season, so for a depleted Shrewsbury Town side the task ahead of them is probably the most difficult they will face the season, especially as they come into the game on the back of three consecutive defeats.
