Bournemouth leave it late to sink Bristol City and move up to second

A late strike from second half substitute Arnaut Danjuma maintained Bournemouth’s unbeaten start to the season in a 1-0 win over Bristol City.

It took the forward just five minutes to make an impact off the bench and move Jason Tindal’s side into the top two ahead of the Robins.

The first chance of the game came for the visitors after forcing the Bournemouth back line into a mistake, with Antoine Semenyo hitting an effort into the side netting from close-range.

The Cherries first chance of the evening came from a free kick from just outside the box after Dominic Solanke was tripped by Zak Vyner, but Junior Stanislas’ effort went wide of the target.

It took until midway through the opening exchanges for City to create their next chance, Tyreeq Bakinson forcing a smart save from Asmir Begovic low to his right hand side to send it out for a corner.

It was the away side who continued to create the better chances throughout the half, and the closest they came was from a Jamie Paterson corner which Tomas Kalas headed towards goal, but it was brilliantly cleared off the line.

Moments later, Solanake found a shot at goal, but his effort was deflected out for a corner as both sides kept each other at bay.

As the half came towards a close, Lewis Cook played a high ball over the top in search of Solanke, but his ball had just too much on it, allowing Daniel Bentley to easily gather in the visitors’ goal.

The first chance of the second half came for Jason Tindal’s side as Josh King found Dan Gosling in the box, but he was unable to make a proper connection as the ball went well wide of the target.

The home side’s dominance continued after the break, as another effort deflected off Taylor Moore before hitting the post as the Cherries looked to take the lead after the break.

Chances continued to be few and far between, although midfielder Lewis Cook found some space just outside the box, but he was unable to test Bentley in the Robins’ goal as his effort was comfortably saved.

Arnaut Danjuma was introduced with 15 minutes remaining in place of Junior Stanislas in hope of securing a crucial three points for the Cherries.

With time running out, Danjuma put the home side in front applying a smart finish beyond Bentley in the Robins’ goal, and some strong defensive resolve in the last few minutes saw the team to a much needed victory.

Next up for Tindal’s side is a visit from Derby County on Saturday, who are only out of the relegation zone on goal difference. Bristol City will look to bounce back with a home game against Norwich, who are unbeaten in four league matches.
