This Aston Villa team reminds us of when Leicester won the league, finding a way of winning and never giving up. A game that was very close with both teams having 50% of the ball, and both teams having six goal attempts.
Villa found what they needed to take the points back to Villa Park, and that was a moment of pure brilliance. Something Leicester found very often in the 2015/16 season with the likes of Riyad Mahrez performing magical moments, although it is very early days.
The two clubs who clearly are creating a bitter rivalry which stems from last season’s Leicester huge wins alongside Dean Smith’s men breaking the hearts of the Foxes late on in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals. A game which consisted of 35 fouls and seven yellow cards, it was a busy day at the office for Jon Moss
Considering the current situation with the home sides squad and the incredibly unlucky amount of injuries to key players, they defended and dealt with Villa very well (until the 91st minute).
Leicester’s top scorer was not the only player missing, as Turkish international Caglar Soyuncu was also ruled out for three months, on top of Wilfred Ndidi and Ricardo Pereira. Their four most important players.
Rather than turn to City legend Wes Morgan, Brendan Rodgers handed a debut to 19-year-old Wesley Fofana who Leicester fans have been eagerly awaiting for weeks now since the talks started.
As exceptional as he is deemed to be, it sure would be scary to start your career in a new country against a team who just put seven by the Champions of England. The new boy showed no signs of nervousness, he looked very comfortable on the ball as he also won seven aerial duels and a staggering nine clearances. He was very good, and it’s exciting times ahead for Leicester if he continues to perform like this.
Matty Cash was a standout performer for Villa, the 23-year-old who signed from Championship strugglers Nottingham Forest in the summer for £16m. He had a 100% tackle success and completed five interceptions. Could the young Englishmen get a chance for his nation soon? Another player going under the radar of Gareth Southgate.
If Villa continue this fine form going into a busy run of fixtures, we could seriously start to see a title race commence here. They haven’t shown any signs of slowing down as of yet, a convincing opening four games for Dean Smith’s tricky Villains. Not to get carried away but Villa fans shouldn’t rule out a first Premier League title at this rate.
