National League week one round-up: Eastleigh thrash Barnet at the Hive

After a break of over seven months, the return of the Vanarama National League saw plenty of exciting action on the opening day of the season.

Part-time club Woking opened up their campaign with a 2-1 victory at home to Solihull Moors.

The Cards had to get their win the hard way after coming from behind. The hosts, who were fielding five debutants, fell behind to a Jamie Ward first half penalty. Woking looked a different side in the second half and came back to grab victory with two goals in eight minutes through Max Kretzschmar and Kane Ferdinand.

New boys Kings Lynn Town opened up their new life in the National League with a 2-2 draw at home to Yeovil Town.

The visitors struck first through Luke Wilkinson. They were pegged back by Dayle Southwell before Courtney Duffus restored the Glovers lead. With time running out up stepped Adam Marriott to salvage a point for Lynn.

Most pundits pre-season prediction of Notts County as winners of the National League suffered an early blow as they lost to Dover Athletic 1-0 at Crabble.

The game was heading for a stalemate until Millwall loanee Harry Ransom struck in the 90th minute to give Dover all three points.

Eastleigh took the honours on the opening day for the result of the opening round by thrashing Barnet 5-1 at the Hive.

Tyrone Barnett struck after only five minutes for the Spitfires and they never looked back. Despite Wes Fonguck levelling for the Bees after 39 minutes the rest of the game was dominated by Eastleigh.

Three goals in 13 second half minutes put Eastleigh firmly in control thanks to strikes from Alex Wynter, Ben House and Cavaghn Miley. Abdulai Baggie completed the route with fifteen minutes to go.

A penalty from new signing Luke Summerfield and Jack Earing was enough for Halifax to complete a 2-0 victory over Dagenham and Redbridge at the Shay.

A 90th minute strike from Connor Lemonheigh-Evans got Torquay United off to the perfect start against big spending Stockport County at Plainmoor.

Wrexham opened up their league season with a 2-1 victory at home to Boreham Wood.

Reece Hall-Johnson put Wrexham in front before Kieran Murtagh levelled for Wood. It was down to a brilliant free-kick from Wrexham’s Luke Young to settle the game and give the Dragons all three points.

Sutton United opened their season in style by defeating Maidenhead United 3-0 at home.

Goals from Omar Bugiel, Craig Eastmond and Callum Kealy earned Sutton a convincing win.

Hartlepool left it late to see off visiting Aldershot Town 2-1 at Victoria Road.

A first half penalty gave Hartlepool a one goal lead at the break. The Shots equalised through Craig Tanner before up popped Gavan Holohan to head in an 86th minute winner.

New boys Weymouth picked up a point in their first game in the National League with a goalless draw at Altrincham.

The match between Wealdstone and Chesterfield was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
