City boss asks United fans to come and support his side

Carlisle City boss James Nichols has invited Carlisle United fans to come and support his side on Saturday.

After two away games, the Citizens make their home debut this Saturday against County Durham side Esh Winning. Midweek was a bit of a disaster as they went down 5-0 to Billingham Synthonia another of last year’s strong promotion candidates.

Some United fans had hoped to be able to go and support their team at Abbey Road (albeit the home club maintained he experiment was for home fans only) where they were to face Cambridge United in one of the games allocated for fans to be allowed to attend.

However the new rules introduced overnight by the English Government have forced the Us to abandon the experiment leaving hopeful Carlisle United fans with no game to watch.

Cambridge were set to allow 2,000 fans for the visit of Carlisle but, with crowds now capped at 1,000, they have decided to move  it behind closed doors.

City manager Jim Nichols is sponsored by Prost International.

He told us:

“I’m sure many United fans were looking forward to seeing their team. The lack of football to watch has affected many of us. Luckily at our level, we are allowed fans in.

“Our ground is thoroughly Covid ready and compliant. We can cope with 300 fans and would love to welcome all football fans to the stadium. We treat football withdrawal symptoms here!

“The lads need to get over a bad result so we’d really appreciate the support too. Seeing a few more faces would give everyone a lift.”

City’s average attendance at their Gillford Park Stadium last season was around 100. It lies on the banks of the River Petteril, between the river and the Upperby Road.

Esh Winning opened the season with a 3-2 win over Brandon United before losing 1-0 at Redcar in midweek. United aim to bounce back from that 5-0 hammering at Billingham Synthonia and are sure to be motivated after being stuck with coach Nichols on the bus on the long trip back from Durham to Carlisle.

Admission to Carlisle City v Esh Winning is just £4 for adults and £2 for concessions. Children are free.
