Millwall end the season on a massive high

Millwall finish the Championship with a 4-1 over manager less Huddersfield Town despite play off places not attainable anymore.

For an end of season game, both teams played the match as if it was the middle of the season with everything still to play for. Huddersfield could have even been relegated today due to a mathematical disaster on goal difference and loads of results going against them. Covering a game behind closed doors for the first time was weird. You could hear every word spoken by the players and referees clearly without fan noise to block them out.

My highlight of the game is when the officials and the players took a knee at the start of the game. As a black man, I was so content with how football in England has supported the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement along with the support of the NHS during this global pandemic. It is only the start, but there is still much more work to do for racial equality.

Millwall started the proceedings by going 1-0 up through forward Matt Smith who showed trickery in the box going past two defenders to slot it into the bottom corner. Huddersfield retaliated with a equaliser thanks to inform forward Karlan Grant with his 19th goal of the season.

Millwall started like the second half like they did the first half. A corner headed in by centre back Jake Cooper in the 47th minute helped Millwal regain their lead. Substitute Jiri Skalak put the game beyond doubt by making it 3-1 in the 63rd minute. Finally, another substitute wrapped up the game for Milwall. Jon Dadi Bodvasrsson made it 4-1 with 11 minutes to go when Connor Mahoney put in a low cross for Bodvasrsson to tap it in the net.

Millwall ended the season finishing 8th – their joint highest finish since their return to the Championship in 2017. Who knows what could have been if they did not lose to London rivals Queens Park Rangers 4-3 last weekend, a result which ended their play-off dreams. Could, next season be the year finally finish in the top six?

As for Huddersfield, they end the season still in the Championship, but they finish it without a full time manager after Dan Crowley was relived of his duties last weekend following a 2-1 victory of newly promoted West Brom. Major investment needed is at the Terriers in order to try and compete for the play off places next season.
