Fulham three hours from Wembley. This is not a traffic report

Fulham is three hours from Wembley only in a footballing sense or if a lorry jacknifes!

Fulham FC are back in the Championship play-offs after their victory over Cardiff City at a cold July evening in on the River Thames.

Promotion is still very much in their own hands after a 2-0 win took them to 76 points, a total that cannot be overhauled by Cardiff, Swansea or Derby. They are therefore guaranteed a top six place which secures at least entry into the play-offs.

Fulham’s win ensures at least a play off

In 2018, they met Derby in the semi finals winning 2-1 on aggregate having lost the first game in the East Midlands. Back in London, second-half goals from Ryan Sessegnon and Denis Odoi secure their first trip to Wembley for 43 years.

They then beat Aston Villa 1–0 in the final, Tom Cairney scoring the only goal of the game in the 23rd minute. That match represented their first game at Wembley since the 1975 FA Cup Final when two Alan Taylor goals saw West Ham win the FA Cup.

They can now turn their attention upwards and northwards in the hope that either West Bromwich Albion or Leeds drop enough points to enable them to be caught.

Fulham have a big say in that as they travel to the Hawthorns to meet West Brom on July 14th. The Baggies first face an awkward trip to Blackburn tomorrow.

In a best case scenario, Fulham could reduce the gap behind the Black Country side to one point with a win there.

Of course Brentford are just one point behind Fulham with a game in hand and they too would be seeking to take advantage of any Albion slip up. They are at Derby tomorrow.

The Bees are looking for their seventh straight league win having scored 16 goals and conceded just one in those six wins.
