The move was announced through Twitter as the winger returns to the club where it all started for him in 2000.
In a career now spanning 20 years, Robben has played for the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
Robben had hung up his boots with Bayern Munich at 35 years of age. The legendary winger has acquired 12 league titles and one Champions League trophy over a glittering career whilst also helping the Netherlands to reach the 2010 World Cup final.
The absence of football proved to be a hard event for the Dutchman, something we witnessed when he joined the Bayern training earlier this month.
He has now announced his permanent return for the 2020/21 season, with Groningen fans hoping he can bring the same excitement he did 20 years ago when he burst on the scene in Holland as a 16-year-old.
