Marco Rose’s side are currently on a four-year hiatus from Europe’s premier competition but victory over Union will reaffirm their end of season targets.
Urs Fischer’s Union have struggled in their last three fixtures, a solitary point against Mainz last time out their only point since the break ended. They do remain the only side, out of 52 previous opponents, Gladbach has faced but never beaten in the Bundesliga, Union triumphing 2-0 in the reverse fixture in November.
Gladbach will miss the midfield presence of Denis Zakaria (knee) and Tobias Strobl, Breel Embolo (calf), Tony Jantschke (suspended) and Fabian Johnson completing the absentees for Rose’s side.
Robert Andrich will miss the game through suspension for Union which may well see Grischa Prömel come in to partner Christian Gentner in the centre of midfield.
Sheraldo Becker (thigh) and Akaki Gogia (fitness test) are the other doubts for the visitors.
The teams have only faced once in the Bundesliga, this being Union’s first year in the competition, Anthony Ujah and Sebastian Andersson firing them to a 2-0 victory at Stadion An der Alten Försterei. The club did also square of in the 2000/01 DFB Cup semi-finals, Union also triumphing this time on penalties.
