Norwich triumph over Tottenham on penalties as Vorm mistake costs Spurs

A mistake from Michel Vorm to allow Josip Drmic to equalise late in the second half ultimately cost Tottenham their place in the FA Cup as Norwich emerged victorious on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The visitors, supported by a full 9,000 Canaries fans who had made the trip, enjoyed large spells of possession early on although Tottenham keeper Vorm had little to contend with.

Tottenham had a great chance to take the lead on 10 minutes, Giovani Lo Celso squandering a fantastic chance to score after being unleashed by Lucas Moura following a quick free-kick inside the Spurs half.

The Argentine redeemed himself just two minutes later however, delivering an in-swinging free-kick invitingly onto the head of Jan Vertonghen, who headed low past Tim Krul to give the home side the lead.

Emi Buendia’s shot after a piece of trickery from Norwich’s own Argentine gave Vorm his first test before the Dutchman, who was appearing for the first time since returning for his second spell at Spurs, almost spilt a shot from range by Lukas Rupp into his own net.

Just on the stroke of half time, Tottenham had a fantastic chance to double their lead after Moura robbed Mario Vrancic of possession, only to fail to beat Krul from close range with Dele Alli begging for the cutback to tap home the second.

Norwich continued to looking threatening after the interval, Daniel Farke’s men almost combining to release Todd Cantwell after intricate play between the Canaries midfield.

Vrancic fired over a free-kick on the edge after a foul from Oliver Skipp, the Tottenham youngster then blazing over from range at the other end.

The Norwich pressure told when Drmic was first to react to bundle the ball home after Vorm spilled a long-range effort from Kenny McLean.

Serge Aurier looked sure to win it for Spurs with five minutes remaining when a low cross found the Ivorian at the back post but miraculous goal-line defending from Grant Hanley kept the scores level. Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham continued to press for the goal to end the tie in normal time to no avail as the teams were set for another 30 minutes.

Tottenham created the first clear opening of extra time as Aurier stung the gloves of Krul, before young striker Troy Parrott was introduced soon after to loud cheers for the home crowd.

Both sides had chances to win it. Adam Idah headed over a Jamal Lewis in the second half of extra time and Lo Celso was denied by the legs of Krul as the match was seemingly destined for penalties.

Gedson Fernandes squandered the final chance of the match as the Portuguese midfielder sliced his shot high into the north London sky, Paul Tierney blowing his whistles to signal penalties.

It was Norwich who would keep their nerve on the night as Farke’s Canaries triumphed 3-2 on penalties and will face the winner of Manchester United and Derby at Carrow Road in the quarter-final.
