Manchester City win their third consecutive Carabao Cup

Manchester City were able to extend their run of consectutive wins in the Carabao Cup to three after a nervy but effective 2-1 win against Aston Villa at Wembley.

Sergio Aguero put the Citizens in the lead after 20 minutes with Rodri adding to Aguero’s opener after half an hour to put City in the hot seat and crusing to another win in the Carabao Cup.

After an error from John Stones, Mbwana Samatta found himself through with the African striker scoring in the 41st minute to set up a very interesting second-half.

After a brave showing in the second half, it looked as though they might force a penalty shootout at the national stadium when Bjorn Engels’ header was tipped onto the framework of the goal by Claudio Bravo, but City held on for a fifth title in the last seven campaigns.

Does this show how dominant Manchester City are in domestic competitions in England?

The answer is yes, they certainly are. As stated above this is their fifth Carabao Cup win in seven years and it makes them the second team to complete a feat of winning the cup three years in a row with only Liverpool winning it four years on the bounce. The Reds also have one more win in the competition (8) under their belt with City winning it seven times up to now.

They won the FA Cup last season alongside the Community Shield for the past two seasons showing their dominance in England and especially against British teams.

City dominated in this game even though Villa tried to knock on the door and tried to force extra-time against them. The Citizens have nothing to lose as they can still potentially win the treble with the Sky Blues still being in the FA Cup and the Champions League.

Next up for City will be a game against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup and in two weeks time they have the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 game against Real Madrid.
