Donnellan goal seals Woking victory over high-flying Yeovil

Yeovil were brought down to earth by a hard-working Woking side, with Shaun Donnellan’s first half effort the difference between the sides.

Cards Manager Alan Dowson made three changes to the side that suffered a 3-0 loss to Wrexham last weekend.

New loan signing Jayden Harris, signed from Championship side Fulham, made his Woking debut. Josh Neufville and Manny Parry also started for the Cards, who were missing Jamar Loza as the striker served the first of his two-game suspension for his sending off against Wrexham.

The hosts had the first chance of the match as early as the sixth minute when Josh Casey’s cross was headed over by Jake Hyde. The deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute when former Glover Shaun Donnellan played a one-two just outside the area before sending a delightful curling shot into the corner of the net.

The visitors only clear cut chance of a disappointing fourty five minutes came in the 40th minute when Jimmy Smith’s volley was well blocked by Moussa Diarra, as the home side fully deserved their lead at the break.

The Glovers came out a much different side in the second half and came within a whisker of an equaliser when Godfrey Poku’s hand ball resulted in a free kick thirty yards out. Up stepped Luke Wilkinson with a shot that looked to be heading for the top corner, but Craig Ross pulled of a stunning stop.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure with Marc Richards shot blocked by Manny Parry with Rhys Murphy dragging the rebound wide of the mark.

Woking tried to hit Yeovil on the counter attack with Godfrey Poku’s shot from the edge of the box cleared of the line by Wilkinson. Recent Luton loanee Josh Neufville had a sight on goal but fired over.

There was still time for the Glovers to have one last chance with Matt Worthington firing over from outside the area, but it wasn’t to be for the visitors who suffered just their second defeat in the last 14 games in all competitions.
