As it happened: Mount at the double as Chelsea edge Reading in a seven-goal thriller

In Frank Lampard’s first game in England as Chelsea boss, his men travelled to the Madejski Stadium to face a Reading side who were putting the finishing touches to their pre-season preparations.

After battling relegation in back-to-back campaigns. the Berkshire outfit will be hoping for better this time round with Jose Gomes preparing for his first full season at the helm.

Despite limited resources, Jose Gomes has integrated some quality and experienced heads into their ranks. The Royals recruitment this summer appears shrewd with veteran Charlie Adam and former Birmingham captain Michael Morrison joining.

The 48-year-old Portuguese coach has also opted to delve into the loan market, regaining Matt Miazga on loan as well as fellow compatriot, Joao Virginia arriving from Everton.

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard is set to rely on the infamous Chelsea youth set-up to provide depth this campaign. Due to their ongoing transfer embargo, Chelsea are unable to add to their squad but do have winger Christian Pulisic at their disposal this time round.

In an enthralling 90 minutes, Chelsea outlasted the Royals to narrowly claim a 4-3 victory at the Madjeski. A Mason Mount brace proved vital as both sides defence had a day to forget.

Displaying a flair in attack and vulnerability in defence, the two team’s went toe to toe from the get-go, with Reading opening the lead through a Josh Barrett strike. Ross Barkley levelled up not long after with a sublime free-kick. Kenedy put Lampard’s men in front at the break after posing a threat down the right flank during the first half.

The two debutants Michael Morrison and Charlie Adam combined moments after the break where Morrison tucked home a corner from the latter. However, two quick goals from Mason Mount put Chelsea in firm control with twenty minutes to go.

Sam Baldock bagged a consolation but wasn’t enough to save Reading from a defeat in their last fixture before the Championship campaign begins.
