Trippier, who joined Spurs from Burnley four years ago playing over 100 games for the lily-whites, has officially joined the Spanish side for £20 million. The England international shed doubt over his future after stating his uncertainty over signing a new deal with the London based side.
The signing of the Englishman marks the seventh signing of the window for Los Rojiblancos and will join new defensive recruits Renan Lodi, Felipe and Francisco Montero. The club has reinvested heavily following some high-profile departures this summer including Diego Godin and Antoine Griezmann.
Trippier, who last represented Spurs in their 2-0 loss in the Champions League final to Liverpool, is an experienced head, having been a regular starter for the club in recent years. The player had been linked with a host of clubs throughout the summer which included Juventus, Bayern Munich and Napoli.
A capable defender who is comfortable with the ball at his feet, Trippier is also a threat from dead-ball scenarios, which is something that will appeal to his now new coach Diego Simeone. Following in the foot-steps of English players abroad like David Beckham and Gareth Bale before him, the 28-year-old’s progression in Spain will certainly be interesting to watch.
