Ings and Adams sign as Targett leaves for Aston Villa

Southampton have announced the signings of Che Adams and Danny Ings from Birmingham and Liverpool respectively, while also confirming that Matt Targett has left for Aston Villa.

Adams, becomes the club’s second signing of the window following the move for Moussa Djenepo, the former Blues forward j0ins on a five-year deal and netted twenty two goals last term in a real breakthrough season for the youngster.

The club had been following him ever since January, however the move failed to materialise as the Championship club weren’t prepared to let go of such an important asset midway through the season.

The deal isn’t great news for fellow strikers Charlie Austin and Sam Gallagher, who both look as though they will be leaving the club this summer, with the pair surplus to requirements.

The 22-year-old spoke to the club’s official website, following his move to the south coast:

“I’m delighted. There was interest in January, when it didn’t quite happen, but I’m happy now that it’s all gone through.

“You can see with the track history – the amount of young players they’re playing, the gaffer’s belief in the young players, the squad in itself – where the club is going to be. I want to be part of that.”

The club also confirmed the permanent signing of Danny Ings from Liverpool for £20 million having spent last season on loan at St Mary’s.

The forward featured 25 times last term, netting eight times in what was largely a frustrating season having missed a number of games through injury in the campaign.

When Saints brought Ings in on loan on deadline day before the start of last season, it was put in place that the south coast club had an obligation to buy the Liverpool forward, regardless of how he performed for the club.

It’s a big season for the Saints number 9 and one which he has to try and keep fit in because that has been his biggest downfall in his pro career to date and so if he can stay away from injuries it could be a massive year for the 26-year-old.

There was one outgoing at the club today as left back Matt Targett left the club to join Aston Villa for £17 million.

With Ryan Bertrand still at the club it was unlikely that the academy graduate would gain a regular place in the side and so for his development this move makes complete sense, while also remaining in the Premier League.

During his time at Saints, he made 63 first team appearances and netted his first Saints goal in the penultimate home game of last season against Bournemouth.

He spent fifteen years at the club having come through the academy setup, so for the club it will be a shame to see him go, but it does make sense for both parties to reach this conclusion on the deal.

Overall, a really busy day for the Saints as they look to get their business done early to avoid another season where they’re involved in the relegation battle, where they’ve been for the past two seasons.
