Lee Bowyer agrees one-year extension with Charlton Athletic

Lee Bowyer has agreed a one-year deal with Charlton to remain as the Addicks’ manager for the upcoming 2019/20 season.

The announcement comes just one day after Charlton released a statement confirming that the club were unable to reach an agreement with Bowyer over a new deal.

The former Newcastle and West Ham midfielder originally joined the Addicks as caretaker manager in March 2018 when Karl Robinson was dismissed before being made permanent boss in September for the remainder of last season.

The 42-year-old guided the Londoners to a third-placed finish in League One and a place in the play-offs. After defeating Doncaster Rovers over two legs, Bowyer’s Charlton came from behind to defeat Sunderland and secure their place in the Championship for the forthcoming season.

Speaking to the club’s website, Bowyer revealed his relief to get the deal over the line at a club he didn’t want to leave.

“We went on a real journey last season. The club came together – the players, the staff, the fans and we achieved something special. The journey hasn’t finished yet and I’m delighted this has all been agreed.

“This has been a long process and I never wanted to leave, I love this club. I’d like to thank the owner for giving me the initial opportunity and now for continuing to believe in me.

“We have a fantastic fanbase here and my focus continues to be getting our squad in the best possible shape for the Championship next season.”

Charlton’s owner Roland Duchatelet is currently trying to sell the club and the fans will hope that after securing their manager for next season they can also have a new owner in SE7.
