Real Madrid complete signing of Ferland Mendy from Lyon

Spanish giants Real Madrid have announced the signing of the French International Ferland Mendy for a deal worth up £47.1 million.

The Galácticos continue their busy spending spree with full-back Mendy their fifth signing of the summer. Following a disappointing campaign, where they went trophy-less, returning boss Zinedine Zidane has no wasted no time in rejuvenating an ageing squad.

The arrivals of Rodrygo, Eder Militao, Luka Jovic, Eden Hazard and now Ferland Mendy means the Spanish outfit have already spent in the region of £270 million in this window alone.

The 24-year old joins Real Madrid after a successful spell at Lyon. Arriving at the French club in 2017 from Le Havre, the left-back quickly developed into one of the mainstays of the team.

Mendy helped the side to a third place finish in Ligue 1 last season, with consistent performances earning him suitors from all over Europe. Mendy was also recently named in the division’s team of the year for the second consecutive campaign.

However, it was Real Madrid who sealed the deal and confirmed the signing on their club website:

“Real Madrid C. F. and Olympique Lyonnais have agreed the transfer of Ferland Mendy.

The player has signed a contract with the club for the next six seasons, running to the 30th of June 2025.”

Following accusations of complacency in the Real Madrid camp, the incoming full-back is expected to compete with Marcelo for the starting left-back birth as Zidane looks to increase the competition within the squad.

Mendy has three caps for France, making his debut in November 2018.
