Charlton Athletic promoted to the Championship after play-off final win

Lee Bowyer’s Charlton Athletic will be planning for life in the Championship after a late Patrick Bauer winner sent them up beating Sunderland 2-1.

The game started in horror for the South East London side after Naby Sarr’s backpass ended up beating his keeper Dillon Phillips, who failed to control the ball and looked back in horror.

However, going into the break they drew level as full-back Ben Purrington, currently at the Addicks on loan from Rotherham, tapped in a Lyle Taylor cross and with the game looking destined to go into extra-time, Bauer stretched the ball into the net to win it.

After finishing third in the league, Charlton Athletic beat Doncaster Rovers over two legs but had to win on penalties with keeper Phillips stepping up to book a place at Wembley against Sunderland for the first time since 1998.

Ending the season, the Addicks went on a three-game unbeaten run beating Scunthorpe United, Gillingham and Rochdale after they lost 2-1 to Oxford United. Before that, they were 11 games unbeaten including beating Luton Town.

Charlton missed out in the play-offs last year to eventual runners-up Shrewsbury Town, Salop losing out to Rotherham United, who will be swapping places with Charlton in the third tier after their relegation.

It will be the first time since the 2015-2016 season that the London club will be playing in the second tier of English football, after finishing 23rd that season.

With a number of players set to be out of contract in the summer and Bowyer yet to be given a new contract, it will still be a busy summer for Valley officials.

Next season, there will be five teams from London in the Championship including Charlton, as Queen Park Rangers, Brentford and Millwall all stayed up with Fulham relegated from the Premier League.
