Aston Villa look to make six unbeaten in the league as they face Millwall Lionesses

Gemma Davies’s Aston Villa side travel to Princes Park to face the Millwall Lionesses on Sunday afternoon last time the two met Villa won 2-0.

In that game back in November last year, the Villans won courtesy of goals from Kerri Welsh and then later in the match Amy West confirmed the victory at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground. The season has failed to get started for the Lionesses as they have only won two matches the entire season.

Those two wins came against the London Bees in the league as they came from behind to win 3-1 at home; the other was also at home as they won 1-0 when they played Lewes FC Women in the SSE Women’s FA Cup. This form has seen Millwall sit firmly at the bottom of the Championship with five points.

The other four games of the last six for Chris Phillips side haven’t been as pleasing as they lost to Lewes FC Women and Liverpool women with the scores ending 2-0 both were away from home. They lost to London rivals Charlton Athletic Women FC 3-0 at the Valley, while the last loss was to Tottenham Hotspur as Rianna Dean scored a late winner to make it 3-2 to the away side.

As for Villa, their last six matches have been much better they’ve won three and drawn two, though their most recent game did end in frustration as they lost 1-0 at home to West Ham. Their wins were a 2-1 away victory over Stoke City; a 5-3 penalty shootout win when playing Sheffield United after they drew 3-3 and finally a 2-0 win when they hosted Charlton.

The two draws came as they faced Durham Women FC and Leicester City with the games ending 2-2 and 0-0 respectively. If Davies’s team were to win this match it would extend their league unbeaten run to six matches as they last faced defeat in the Championship when they were against the London Bees back in late November. Villa currently are eighth in the league with 17 points to there name.

Millwall manager Phillips told Millwall Supporters Club this after their loss to Lewes Women FC:

“I thought the girls played well. I’m disappointed with the result, but with the second half I’m not too disappointed with our performance – we created a lot of chances, but unfortunately, they didn’t go in and on another day we would score two or three goals.

It was about recovery after the Charlton game, looking at tapes, look at concepts we wanted to work on today. In the large, most of them worked, the only thing that didn’t work for us today was getting the ball in the back of the net.”

Aston Villa defender Jade Richards had this to say to football London after there last win which was over Charlton:

“We had spoken in the dressing room about coming out and starting quick, getting in their faces and not letting them have any time on the ball, and I think we executed that brilliantly.

“I thought we dealt with them and anything that came our way. We limited their shots on goal and we had a few opportunities to score more ourselves.

“Many people would have thought they would come here and got a win today but we want the three points and we want to climb the table with a few games in hand.”

Evie Clarke is the top goal scorer for the hosts scoring seven goals in 22 games for the London side, she last scored a double in their 3-1 win over the London Bees three games ago.

Midfielder Jodie Hutton is Villa’s leading scorer with nine goals in 19 matches for her side, she last scored a hat-trick which ended up helping her side to extra-time and then penalties when they played Sheffield United, winning that game meant a space in the FA Cup Quarter-Finals.
