Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi is the latest to be called up to England squad

After three players were ruled out of Gareth Southgate’s squad due to being injured it was announced that James Ward-Prowse would be one of the stars to make his way into the team, the latest is Chelsea player Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The winger received the news after being called up to Aidy Boothroyd under-21 squad, this means that the Wandsworth born 18-year-old could feature his first match for his country in their Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro.

So far this season the blues player has featured 19 times scoring on five occasions however Hudson-Odoi is yet to make a start in the Premier League, he has played a part in every single Europa League match this season for the Premier League side.

Luke Shaw has been named as the final player to make his way into the three spaces provided by Fabian Delph, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and John Stones all pulling out of the squad with injuries.

The United left-back has had an impressive month helping Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to claim three clean sheets in the four matches they played which lead to the former Saints man being named on the shortlist for February player of the month.

Hudson-Odoi has previously represented England from under-16 to under-19 level which saw him lift the under-17 World Cup back in 2017. He was set to play his part in the under-21 squad and after being told of the revelation he thought that it was a joke saying:

“I thought Aidy Boothroyd was joking. “I was shocked and then when I heard that I actually had to go over [to England’s training base at St George’s Park], I couldn’t believe it. I was delighted.

“It’s a dream come true. Now I’ve got to work hard, enjoy every moment and keep working to just hopefully make an impact when I get the opportunity.

“It’s been a crazy experience but I’m delighted to get the call and it’s a nice feeling to be here as well.”

If the Chelsea youngster does play a part in any of the two qualifiers he will become England’s eighth youngest player.

The current youngest player to have ever played for the Three Lions is Everton’s, Theo Walcott. He was aged 17 years and 75 days when he made his debut against Hungary in May 2006 and was at the time playing for the then Championship side Southampton.

Walcott would make his switch to Arsenal after playing in that match. The 30-year-old has since gone on to play 47 times for his national side scoring eight goals which included his only ever international hat-trick when he netted three past Croatia in 2008.
