Sarri rues ‘missed opportunity’ after Wolves draw

Maurizio Sarri feels his Chelsea side missed an opportunity to close the gap on the top four after Wolves claimed a point at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s Wolves could have easily have claimed all three points in west London but a 91st minute Eden Hazard strike saved the Blues’ blushes.

When asked in his post-match press conference about the opportunity to reduce the deficit to the four Champions League places, the Italian was realistic about Chelsea’s missed chance.

“When you have only ten matches every chance you don’t win is a missed opportunity. In this moment, in the last 6 matches, we have won four and drawn two so there is a little consistency in this moment. We have to think only to the next match. We need to recover two points immediately.”

Tottenham had lost away at St Mary’s on Saturday and with Manchester United losing to Arsenal after Chelsea’s draw, Sarri was clearly frustrated at not being able to pile pressure upon their league rivals.

Chelsea still only remain three points outside the top four and do have a game in hand over their rivals after their participation in the Carabao Cup final.

Sarri’s team play Everton on Sunday with the chance to go level on points with the Gunners in fourth, although they would need to thrash the Toffees in order to leapfrog Unai Emery’s side.

With all of their rivals having this weekend off, the fixture against Everton represents the perfect opportunity to recover from their Wolves draw and gain an advantage in the top four race before the Premier League stops for an international break.

The trip to Everton is no easy task with Liverpool held recently at Goodison Park but Chelsea should be confident that they can overcome Marco Silva’s side and boost their Champions League hopes.
