Julián Speroni breaks Crystal Palace all-time clean sheet record

Julián Speroni is now officially the record clean sheet holder at Crystal Palace.

The Argentine has surpassed Nigel Martyn by claiming his 112th clean sheet as his side cruised to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round.

He told Palace TV:

“I didn’t know, I thought I needed one more actually.”

This was the goalkeeper’s second appearance of the season after starting against Liverpool at Anfield where the Eagles lost 4-3. The 39-year-old now has played 405 matches for Roy Hodgson’s side, the manager had this to say:

“It was a good news day for Crystal Palace Football Club.”

“With Julian Speroni breaking the record for clean sheets, which is fantastic, especially after last week when he had to shoulder some of the blame for the goals we conceded up at Anfield.

“For him to come back and do what he did was a real good news story.”

Palace boss Roy Hodgson will face a tough decision considering the club have just gone out and signed Lucas Perri on loan from Brazilian club Sao Paulo. Either way, Speroni will go down as a club legend in South London.

When he signed from Scottish side Dundee FC in 2004, very few would have expected the success that the shot-stopper has seen in London.

He was the number one keeper at Selhurst Park when the club got promoted back to the Premier League in 2012-2013 and has had many cherished memories with the club, adding this to the list.
