Football rules are set to receive amendments in order to allow replays of video assistant referees decisions to be shown on big screens.
The rules are due to be changed ahead of the system’s introduction into the Premier League next season; however, the technology has faced criticism due to supporters being left in a moment of confusion while the referee assesses private replays.
Clubs are currently not allowed to display video replays to supporters due to risk of public order offences, but the Premier League is aware of the necessity to make supporters more aware of proceedings.
VAR is set to be introduced next season after Premier League clubs voted unanimously in favour of the technology. The system is already in use in the top divisions in Germany and Italy and was used with mixed results at the World Cup in Russia last summer.
The new technology has been trialed in a number of Emirates FA Cup and Carabao Cup ties over the previous two seasons; however, decisions have not been replayed on big screens despite the League’s stakeholders believing supporters inside the stadium should have the same level of access as those watching at home.
Should the changes be made, replays would only be shown once the referee has made his decision.
Manchester United and Liverpool are the only current Premier League clubs without big screens, however it is understood that decisions will be communicated to supporters without an explanation via the stadium announcer or scoreboard.
