Women’s Super League title race: Can anyone stop Arsenal?

Arsenal are top of the Women’s Super League with all the teams currently enjoying a winter break until the first week of the new year. The Gunners have made a formidable start to the season but injuries to key players could see them come unstuck in the months ahead.

Here, Prost International looks at the three teams most likely to stop Arsenal getting their hands on the WSL title in May.

Manchester City

Nick Cushing’s side are the only team so far to have defeated Arsenal this season. Man City won 2-0 against a depleted Gunners side and are level on points with them, although they have played a game more than the league leaders.

Man City are now the only unbeaten team in the league (W8, D3) and they are hot on the heels of Arsenal, waiting to capitalise on the smallest of mistakes. If anyone can stop Arsenal, Man City can.

Chelsea

The defending champions have recovered from a poor start to the season and now sit third in the table. The Blues were thrashed 5-0 by Arsenal on their home turf in October, a result that they will be keen to avenge when they visit Borehamwood in January.

With Chelsea seven points behind the league leaders it already seems unlikely that they will be able to get close enough to Joe Montemurro’s side to derail their title hopes.

Birmingham City

Marc Skinner’s side have lost just three matches in an impressive campaign so far. Birmingham are defensively solid and adept at grinding out crucial results.

The Blues finished fifth last season, a result they will be looking to improve this term, but they are not yet at the level required to thwart Arsenal’s title ambitions.
