Sol Campbell named manager of Macclesfield Town

Former Arsenal. Tottenham and England defender Sol Campbell has been confirmed as the new manager of Macclesfield Town on an 18-month contract.

The Silkmen are currently rock bottom of League Two with only 10 points claimed after 19 games, and the Cheshire-based side has appointed Campbell, who has never managed before, to overturn their bad fortune this season. Macclesfield have been without a manager since October 8th when then manager Mark Yates was sacked for poor results.

Although this is Campbell’s first foray into first-team management, the 44-year-old has been working with England’s U21 squad and manager Aidy Boothroyd as part of the FA’s ‘In Pursuit of Progress’ initiative, a programme that offers BAME coaches experience working with England teams.

As a player, Campbell captained Spurs and then made the infamous move across London to Arsenal in 2001 where he went on to be one of the best defenders during Arsene Wenger’s reign as the Gunners manager.

The centre-back was part of the famous ‘Invincibles’ squad as well as being part of the Arsenal team that won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups. The England international also scored the Gunner’s goal in the 2006 Champions League final against Barcelona.
