Sol Campbell eyes first management job with Macclesfield Town

Former England international Sol Campbell has entered advanced talks with League Two side Macclesfield Town as he looks to get his first job in management.

It is expected that negotiations will continue, with Campbell expected to be in the stands for Tuesday’s game away to Exeter City, as both sides hope to get the deal over the line soon.

The 73-time capped England player told Sky Sports’ Goals on Sunday, “When I retired, I wanted a bit of a break, but within 18 months I started doing my courses. That took three and a half years, and that’s dedication in itself.”

The interview came after the most recent rejection as the former Arsenal defender has been in talks with many clubs since the start of the year. He was turned down by Oxford United as they appointed Karl Robinson.

While both League Two outfits Oldham Athletic and Grimsby Town decided against giving the job to the 44-year-old.

Campbell has had a couple of brief stints in coaching. First as assistant manager Dennis Lawrence for Trinidad & Tobago. While he has also coached QPR’s academy for a short period of time.

He is currently working with England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd as part of the BAME coaching placement, a role that could see him travel to Italy if unsuccessful with this management offer.

Should Macclesfield hire the two-time Premier League winner he will have a job on his hands as the League Two team are currently bottom with ten points, though they did win their last match 1-0 against Yeovil Town thanks to a Michael Rose penalty.

The Silkmen have been a without a manager since October 8th after sacking Mark Yates, who failed to win any of the 12 league games, only drawing four.
