The Women’s Super League has been full of excitement and entertainment with plenty of surprise results. The league has two new teams, Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham who are adjusting to full-time football in the top tier.

There is currently an international break with no WSL teams in action until Saturday 17th November which offers time to reflect on the season so far. Here is Part 3 of an alphabetical review of how each team has fared up to this point.

Liverpool Women

The team who have had the most disrupted start to the season is Liverpool. This followed a summer of upheaval in which many of their first team players joined Manchester United Women in the Championship.

After just one league game in charge of the Reds, Neil Redfearn resigned as manager. Chris Kirkland was named as caretaker boss with Vicky Jepson as his assistant. At the end of October, Jepson was appointed as the club’s new first-team manager bringing some much-needed stability to the club.

Liverpool haven’t drawn a match this season, winning three and losing four of their seven games so far. Their results need to improve against the top sides as they have been beaten by Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea so far without putting up much of a fight.

Vicky Jepson’s side are still in a period of transition and will need time to adjust to her methods before their season can really begin.

Manchester City Women

After missing out on the title last season, Manchester City will want to get back to the top but at the moment Arsenal are standing in their way.

Nick Cushing’s side have played eight games this season (one more than Arsenal) and won five of them. They will be disappointed at the points dropped due to the three draws against Chelsea, Bristol City and Reading.

Nikita Parris has been in fantastic form for Man City and her brace in the 3-0 win over Liverpool made her the league’s leading goalscorer with 37 goals.

Man City face Arsenal at home in their first game of December which could be the game that decides where the title will end up this season.

Reading Women

Fourth place was an impressive finish for Reading last term and they have made a good start to the current campaign.

The Royals have been victorious against Yeovil Town, Liverpool and Bristol City with Fara Williams scoring some superb goals in the process. They also held Man City to a draw which was a very good result.

Brooke Chaplen is a key player for Reading and she was the club’s top scorer last season. Chaplen has scored two league goals this season and could attract the attention of bigger clubs if she maintains her impressive form.

Kelly Chambers has worked hard to create a team that are hard to beat and good to watch and that has really come together in the last few seasons.
