Queretaro visit only heightens Ronaldinho speculation

Could Ronaldinho be the latest superstar to arrive in the MLS?

Ronaldinho’s charismatic performance in Houston earlier this week only served to increase speculation that he might make one last cameo, this time in Major League Soccer.

The MLS continues to grow in profile and stature, with increasing attendance figures and sponsorship deals creating a domestic league that America can finally be proud of. It has led to a significant increase in overseas players who are attracted by the opportunity to play in a league where they can enjoy wonderful weather and passionate support from fans who really get behind their team.

Thierry Henry and Robbie Keane stand out as star players who have made a name for themselves at the New York Red Bulls and LA Galaxy respectively, but the imminent arrival of Kaka, Frank Lampard and David Villa in the 2015 MLS season illustrates just how far American soccer has progressed under the guidance of Don Garber.

His vision and passion to see the MLS grow may be further enhanced by the potential arrival of Ronaldinho who would make a major impact on and off the field. While fans will back their favorite team on bettingsports.com ahead of the upcoming Conference Finals, they could soon be welcoming another Brazilian superstar to accompany Kaka in America.

From Mexico to America

Despite being in the latter stages of his career, Ronaldinho has lost none of the magical tricks and skills that once made him one of the best players in world football. The 34-year-old may have lost a yard of pace that made him unstoppable during his time at Gremio, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, but the two-time FIFA World Player of the Year continues to score goals wherever he goes via free-kicks, overhead kicks and long range wonder goals. Ronaldinho has never been one to do things the easy way, but it is that quality that made him one of the best players of his generation with very few able to replicate the samba skills that he has in his locker.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to the MLS for the last four years, with his release from Atletico Mineiro in July creating considerable hype that Ronaldinho could finally be arriving in America. Despite signing a two-year contract with Liga MX side Queretaro in Mexico, impressive performances have led to a number of MLS clubs looking into the possibility of signing the Brazilian superstar.

Queretaro president Adolfo Rios has publicly stated that he believes Ronaldinho will fulfill his contract with the club, but the opportunity to enjoy one last swansong in America where fans will adore every silky touch and trick he performs may tempt him to move.

Where could Ronaldinho end up?

While the hype and furor surrounding Ronaldinho’s potential arrival in the MLS is not surprising, there remains a big question mark over which franchise would be able to afford his wages.

The Designated Player Rule may allow clubs to make an exception to their salary cap and revel in the publicity and marketing benefits of sealing an illustrious deal, but signing a player of Ronaldinho’s caliber will come at a considerable price.

LA Galaxy have been linked with a move for Ronaldinho, while New York Red Bulls may also rekindle their interest following talks between both parties during the summer. 2015 MLS newcomers New York City and Orlando City may also look to flex their financial muscle, with the latter providing Ronaldinho with the opportunity to play on the same team as fellow Brazilian and long-time friend Kaka.
