Adu
Freddy Adu has joined Landon Donovan and Eddie Johnson in the elite club of Americans scoring for their new league teams. Adu is technically still a Benfica player. He has finished unsuccessful and uneventful loan spells with another Portuguese club Belenenses, after another with AS Monaco.
However, there is early evidence that his fortunes may be on the rise once more. In his third match for newest loan club Aris Thessaloniki in Greece, Adu scored the go-ahead goal just before halftime to give his side the 2-1 lead over Ergotelis. This comes on the heels of fellow American Eddie Johnson’s first goal for the club last week (not the same Eddie Johnson as the player until recently training with Sounders FC).
If Johnson and Adu continue to perform, Bob Bradley may find a second look at them inevitable given the injury concerns over Clint Dempsey and Charlie Davies. Adu has two USA goals in 15 appearances so far in his young life, but his lack of first team action in Europe has been unhelpful to his case for a slot in South Africa.
