For the first time since the inaugural Best of U.S. Soccer Awards in 2002, the Best Soccer Bar award went to an establishment outside of Chicago. Fado Irish Pub in Seattle became the first bar west of the Windy City to win the prize, in the closest race out of all of them on the 2009 ballot.
The bar is a member of our Seattle Soccer Bar Guide, and has been the venue for many Sounders FC viewing parties, organised by Sounders supporters clubs like Gorrilla FC and the Sounders FC Meet up Group.
Fado however does more than provide a friendly and hospitable viewing environment for football fans. Earlier this season, it was thanks to a unique partnership with Fado that Prost Amerika was able to report live on Sounders FC’s US Open Cup triumph in Washington DC. The coverage was extensive and did much to elevate the profile of this site’s reporting on a national scale. The bar has also paid for Sounders FC fans to fly to away matches in Columbus through raffle prizes organised by the Gorrilla FC club.
Glaswegian bar manager Gerry Leonard was delighted. Recognising that the award belonged partly to the city of Seattle too, he told us,
“I’d like to thank everyone that voted for us first of all. That we won a US-wide award shows just how important a soccer city Seattle is more than anything. I hope everyone comes and checks us out and we’re looking forward to the World Cup.”
Fado is located at 801 1st Avenue in Seattle’s Pioneer Square district.
