Watson’s brace enough to see off Flyers

A pair of Flames goals in the third period was enough to break a 2-2 tied game and secure Guildford the win over the visiting Fife Flyers at the Spectrum on Tuesday night.

A crowd of over 1,200 saw Flames dominate the opening period with 18 shots on Shane Owen’s net.

The visitors broke the deadlock on 10.19 after a one-timer from Greg Chase beat Kevin Lindskoug in the Flames goal.

The home side hit back when a beautifully threaded pass from Spencer Trapp found the stick of Owen Griffiths, with his shot coming off the pads of Owen falling straight to John Dunbar who made no mistake.

With only five seconds remaining in the opening period, Flyers restored their lead when Jacob Benson’s shot hit the post with the puck dropping down to Craig Peacock to score.

Guildford levelled on 33.03 when they had a two-man advantage with Kristian Blumenschein and Jonas Emmerdahl serving penalties. Watson bagged his first of the night to draw the home side level.

For the first time in the game, Flames went ahead when Levi Cable picked up a loose puck on 51.10 to score.

With just one minute remaining in the game and Fife desperate for an equaliser, they pulled their netminder.

Just two seconds remained on the clock when Watson made the game safe to score an empty-net goal and secure victory for the Flames.

Guildford are back in action on Thursday when they make the long trek up to Scotland to face the Glasgow Clan before facing Dundee on Saturday evening at the Spectrum.
