Can Doncaster continue their good run under Andy Butler with a win against the Railwaymen at Gresty Road?

Doncaster Rovers face an inconsistent Crewe Alexandra at Gresty Road on Tuesday night, with the away side targeting a third successive win under new interim manager Andy Butler.

Former Rovers boss Darren Moore left the club last week in search of pastures new, taking charge of Sky Bet Championship strugglers Sheffield Wednesday.

Since his departure, and the subsequent appointment of former club captain Andy Butler, the South Yorkshire outfit have won two successive games in League One. This good run of form has put Doncaster’s ambitions of promotion to the second tier firmly within reach.

The Englishman began his tenure with a victory. His side defeated play off hopefuls Portsmouth following a tightly contested encounter that ended 2-1 to the home side and put an end to a five-game winless run.

Their bout at the weekend against Plymouth Argyle also saw Butler’s team claim all three points, with goals from Thomas Anderson and Omar Bogle early on in both halves moving them up to fifth place.

With at least two games in hand on all the sides above them, automatic promotion is a realistic target for Rovers. Peterborough United and Hull City currently occupy the top two positions and sit seven points above Doncaster; however, the two sides face one another this weekend, meaning a win for Doncaster is guaranteed to bridge the gap.

The club have confirmed that winger Jon Taylor will miss the clash at Gresty Road. The 28-year-old was withdrawn after just 28 minutes against Portsmouth after sustaining an ankle injury.

However, Fejiri Okenabirhie has an outside chance of featuring on Tuesday as he is recovering from a foot injury.

Crewe come into the game off the back of a disappointing defeat to Michael Appleton’s Lincoln City. The Alex had their fair share of possession but failed to create many clear-cut chances.

However, David Artell’s men have reason to be quietly confident; they haven’t lost a league game at home since the start of November (four draws, six wins). They will be hoping to extend this impressive run to eleven and deal Andy Butler his first blow as Doncaster boss.
