Swansea City take all three points over Rotherham United in South Yorkshire

Goals from Conor Hourihane, Matt Grimes and Jay Fulton were enough for Swansea to see off in-form Rotherham at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

It was a first half to remember for Steve Cooper’s side with Hourihane opening the scoring with a driving finish into the bottom right corner after good work from Yan Dhanda.

Swansea extended the lead when the ball fell to captain Grimes on the edge of the box and his effort nestled into the bottom left corner.

Rotherham did get themselves back into the game with a Freddie Ladapo header but substitute Jay Fulton rounded off the scoring with a neat finish at the near post.

The game started out as a fairly even contest with Swansea threatening a little more but they could only fashion a few crosses which went sailing over Rotherham keeper Jamal Blackman’s goal.

The visitors dominated the ball for the majority of the first half and they managed to turn their possession into a goal. Andre Ayew picked the ball up in the middle of the park and drove forward before finding Dhanda out wide, the 22-year-old’s cross made its way to Hourihane who struck a sweet effort into the bottom right corner to open the scoring.

The visitors would double their lead just ten minutes later, a corner would be punched clear by Blackman but it would fall to Grimes around 20 yards out and his effort sailed past the Rotherham stopper into the bottom left corner.

Swansea were in cruise control going int half-time forcing Paul Warne into action as he brought on Ladapo and Ryan Giles to try and get back into the game, to Warne’s joy one of the substitutions would pay off as Ladapo headed home and got Rotherham back into the game with 25 minutes to go.

The home side pushed for an equaliser but were punished by a substitute from Swansea as Fulton came on the pitch and scored after only being on the pitch for a minute. Jake Bidwell did well down the left-hand side and whipped in an inviting ball which Fulton delicately flicked home to all but confirm the win for Swansea.

The result keeps Rotherham in the bottom three although do have a couple of games in hand on some of their rivals while Swansea maintain 2nd place as they look towards automatic promotion.
