Tariq Lamptey shines as Brighton win their second game of the season despite ‘unfair’ sending off

Brighton hold on to an important 2-1 away win after late VAR drama which ruled out a penalty for Aston Villa. Goals from Danny Welbeck and Solly March secured the vital win for Potter’s side.

Tariq Lamptey saw red after two late fouls on John McGinn and Jack Grealish which lead to the wing-backs dismissal, however, the England U21 international showed a very promising performance as the Seagull’s won on the road at Villa Park.

The youngster caused Villa’s Matt Targett plenty of trouble down the right-hand side, beating his man for pace several times. This allowed for Lamptey to exploit the Villa defence, however failed to record an assist in this fixture.

Following Lamptey’s red-card, Graham Potter commented on the decision.

“Well it was on the other side of the pitch from where I was, so I haven’t seen it back. Tariq said there wasn’t much contact so whether it is a yellow card or not I do not know. I need to have a look at it back.”

Lamptey will now be out of Albion’s next fixture as they host Liverpool at the Amex, this is a game where Brighton will miss the threat and pace that the former Chelsea man provides going forward.

Albion ended the game with five central defenders on the pitch, in order to see out this result. This almost proved costly as Villa had a penalty claim ruled out after an on-field review from Michael Oliver, awarding a free-kick in favour of Brighton.

Despite the full-time result, Villa remained dominant throughout the game but failed to find the back of the net on multiple occasions. An early hamstring injury for Ross Barkley saw the loanee be replaced by Bertrand Traoré in the second minute of the match.

Barkley is to undergo a scan, however, Dean Smith commented on the player’s injury.

“I’ve just spoken to him. I’m gutted for him, but he doesn’t think it’s as bad as they can be”

Dean Smith also took the time to comment on the game himself.

“I was more frustrated by the fact that we had some big chances and didn’t take them we weren’t our blistering best.”

With England’s growing full-back problem, a number of performances from Tariq Lamptey could earn him a call-up under Gareth Southgate ahead of the next international break in March 2021, having played a role in the England youth sides this could be the youngsters break-out season on the south coast.

Aston Villa will travel to the capital as they face West Ham on Monday night, the Lion’s will look to bounce back against a tricky Hammers side to avoid back to back defeats for the second time this season in the Premier League.
