Manchester City forward Nikita Parris has won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award, beating Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema by a single vote.

Parris has been in competition with Miedema for the Golden Boot all season and while Miedema is three goals ahead of her in that race, Parris narrowly overcame Miedema by 11 to 10 in the second stage of voting for the women’s award.

Man City pushed Arsenal all the way in the league, with the Gunners ultimately proving victorious, and Parris has been a huge part of their season, scoring 19 league goals and providing seven assists.

Currently the FA Women’s Super League all-time leading scorer, Parris could yet complete a domestic double with her side this season. Man City have already won the League Cup and could add the FA Cup if they beat West Ham at Wembley on Saturday, May 4.

Parris featured in the SheBelieves Cup for England last month where they won the tournament for the first time. She is set to be an integral part of their team as they aim to win the World Cup in France this summer.

The Man City forward is the second winner of the award after Chelsea forward Fran Kirby won the inaugural  Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award last season.
