England captain pens new deal with Yorkshire

Joe Root has signed a new contract with Yorkshire Cricket Club, ensuring the England captain is tied to the White Roses until at least 2022.

The talented academy product was already contracted to stay at Headingley until the end of 2019 but has signed a new contract extension to confirm his commitment to the County.

Speaking to yorkshireccc.com, Root said: “I love playing for Yorkshire. It’s my county. It’s where I’ve grown up and what I know. It’s the White Rose and what it’s about. For me, I don’t really see myself playing anywhere else. I’m passionate about us as a county being successful. If I’ve got any opportunity to try and add to that and be a part of something, that’s really exciting for me.

“I’m looking forward to this new adventure for the club – new ground, young side, it should be a really exciting time.”

Root broke onto the cricketing scene as a 12-year-old and made his County debut in 2009 before his Championship debut in 2011 – scoring 66 runs against Worcestershire. The England captain finished his breakthrough first-class season with 1,013 runs.
