Canvey Island, Chorley, Barnet, Darlington and Marine all caused upsets over higher placed opposition in the FA Cup First Round Proper that was held over Remembrance Weekend.

Canvey Island came into their FA Cup game knowing they were the lowest-ranked side left in this year’s competition following Skelmersdale’s exit at the hands of EFL side Harrogate Town on Friday night.

With a remarkable first-half strike by Connor Hubble striking first blood for the Gulls of the Isthmian North, the hosts in Banbury got an equaliser in the 67th minute before an Elliot Ronto finish just minutes after saw the game being won with over 20 minutes to go sparking Canvey’s return to the Second Round for the first time in over 15 years. Becoming Essex’s only side to remain in the competition following the rest of Saturday’s games.

At the Colchester Community Stadium, Northern Premier League Division One North West side Marine managed to make one of the biggest giant killings of the round with an upset over League Two opponents Colchester United who haven’t been immune from shock defeats at this stage of the competition before in recent years.

Anthony Milley put the visitors ahead after 22 minutes before Henry Pell equalised during the second half for the U’s. Penalties saw Marine as the victors managing a 5-3 victory on spot-kicks.

Elsewhere, Dagenham & Redbridge managed to see off the threat of Ian Holloway’s Grimsby Town with a remarkable 3-1 victory over their League Two opponents.

Scott Wilson opened the scoring for the hosts in the tenth minute before Owen Windsor equalised for the Mariners on the hour mark from the penalty spot. Wilson scored once more for the hosts to win the game in the 91st minute with Mitch Brundle managing to grab a third for the Daggers in the 96th minute to see off any chance of their visitors forcing extra time.

Whilst we’re on the subject of the National League, Boreham Wood hosted League Two basement side Southend United and despite initially taking a 2-0 lead, the Blues from Essex managed to claw the game back to 2-2 forcing extra time to be played with the scoreline becoming 3-3 as a result. However, it was the Wood who managed to see off their opponents winning 4-3 in the penalty shootout.

National League North side Brackley Town also relied on spot-kicks to secure their place in the second round after a 3-3 draw achieved in 120 minutes with Isthmian Premier side Bishops Stortford.

Elsewhere, fellow National League side Yeovil Town had to go through extra-time in order to see off Bromley as a 122nd-minute strike from visiting academy graduate Gabby Rogers was enough to make the West Country side avoid penalties once more.

It was a day to forget for Swindon Town of League One after they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to National League North side Darlington and it was a similar day to forget for League Two promotion hopefuls Port Vale as they conceded an 82nd-minute winner to Kings Lynn Town of the National League. League One side Rochdale also fell 2-1 at home to National League promotion pushing Stockport County.

League One Sunderland also fell at the first hurdle of the competition with a 1-0 defeat endured by League Two Mansfield Town who were overseen by new manager Nigel Clough. Fellow League Two side Bradford City managed to oversee National League South opponents Tonbridge Angels 7-0 in the early kick-off.Exeter City of the same division as the Bantams overcame a spirited AFC Fylde side from the National League North 2-1.

Tonbridge’s fellow league opponents Concord Rangers suffered penalty heartbreak with a 5-4 loss on penalties to League Two Stevenage following a 1-1 draw achieved after 120 minutes. Fellow League Two side Cheltenham Town also defeated South Shields 3-1 to end the run made by the Northern Premier League side.

Bolton Wanderers’ poor form of run lately in League Two continued with a 3-2 defeat to League One side Crewe Alexandra whilst League Two Cambridge United saw their hopes of another cup run in the competition ended at the first hurdle by League One strugglers Shrewsbury Town.

On Sunday, Isthmian North side Maldon & Tiptree went into their home tie with League Two Morecambe with optimism in hoping to join their county and division counterparts in Canvey Island in gaining a place in Monday’s Second Round draw.

However, it wasn’t to be as an Adam Phillips penalty in the 43rd minute was the only goal of the game as the Shrimps avoided an upset.

Fellow League Two side Oldham Athletic also travelled to non-league opposition in the form of Hampton & Richmond Borough and again, survived the threat from their National League South opponents with a 3-2 victory.

There was sadness for Eastleigh as they managed to hold League One MK Dons throughout 120 minutes before the Dons managed to overcome their National League opponents 4-3 on penalties.

Southern Premier League South side Hayes & Yeading also suffered defeat on penalties as League Two Carlisle United managed a 4-3 victory following a 2-2 draw in 120 minutes.

Torquay United saw a 6-5 defeat to League Two Crawley Town and Eastbourne Borough suffered a 3-0 defeat to League One Blackpool in the late kick-off.

Elsewhere, it was good news for National League sides as Barnet managed a 1-0 victory over League One strugglers Burton Albion and Solihull Moors managed a 3-2 victory at League Two strugglers Scunthorpe United.

There was also success in the National League North and South as strugglers Chorley managed a fantastic 3-2 victory at League One side Wigan Athletic following 120 minutes and Havant & Waterlooville also saw victory at Westleigh Park as they ended Cray Valley Paper Mills’ gallant run to the First Round with a 1-0 scoreline being enough for them.

Chorley found themselves going into today’s game at Wigan in 22nd place in the National League North with only one point earned so far this season. Today’s victory could hopefully change that run in the coming weeks. Photo: Emirates FA Cup Twitter
