After a thrilling final 15 minutes in PSG’s win over St. Etienne, the title race in Ligue 1 gets even closer as three points separate the top four teams.

Five goals were scored at the death in Paris with Mauro Icardi’s 94th-minute winner grabbing the three points for PSG. Although the Parisians are still favourites to win the league with five games to go, they face tough competition from their three opponents.

Lille

Lille currently sit at the top of the table on 70 points and one point ahead of PSG. Unlike their rivals, the leaders have been great defensively compared to going forward. Their centre-back partnership has been one of the most surprising successes of Europe this season as 37-year-old Jose Fonte partners promising talent Sven Botman, who is 21-years-old.

Along with goalkeeper Mike Maignan, Fonte and Botman have helped Lille 18 clean sheets this season and only conceded 20 goals, which is fewer than any other team in the league.

Lille also have the best away record in the league and three of their final five are away from home, including a huge game at Lyon this weekend. The club has not won the Ligue 1 title since the 2010/11 season when they were captained by Rudi Garcia, who currently manages Lyon.

PSG

We all know the quality PSG possesses. Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Angel Di Maria, and Julian Draxler, to just name some of the attackers. They have won the last three Ligue 1 titles and manager Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping to win his first league title.

PSG are also the top-scoring team in the competition with 74 goals and Mbappe is currently the leading scorer with 23 goals. Captain Marquinhos has also helped reinforce the defence as he has improved his game over the last 12 months.

Although PSG does not face any of their direct league rivals in their remaining fixtures, they are still participating in both the Coupe de France and the Champions League. This could lead to Pochettino prioritising games rather than focusing solely on the league.

Monaco

Monaco’s 2021 has helped secure their place in the title race as they have only lost one game this year and went on a seven-game winning streak in January. The side has been led by the attacking contributions of Wissam Ben Yedder and Kevin Volland who both have 22 direct goals or assists in the league this season.

Young defender Benoit Badiashile has made headlines this season as the 20-year-old surpassed 50 appearances for Monaco this year and received interest from teams such as Manchester United.

Monaco are currently two points off Lille and have not won the league since their famous 2016/17 season with a team that featured the likes of Mbappe, Bernardo Silva, and Fabinho.

Lyon

Last season’s Champions League semi-finalists are currently fourth in Ligue 1, three points off the top. Lyon arguably have the hardest run-in as they face Lille and Monaco in back-to-back games, which could seal their fate for the season.

Memphis Depay has brilliantly led the side and has also contributed with 18 goals and nine assists. His brace against Nantes in their most recent game was vital as they won consecutive league games for the first time since February.

Lyon are still in the Coupe de France, where they face Monaco in the quarter-finals. They have not won the cup since 2012 and the league since 2008 when they won seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles from 2002-2008.

The twist

Although all four of these clubs have a great chance of winning the league title, the team that finishes fourth faces a bigger loss than the other three, apart from the most obvious reason of finishing the lowest.

In Ligue 1, only the top three clubs qualify for the Champions League and the team in fourth goes into the Europa League. This gives an added incentive for the clubs to go hard in the last five games as they have not secured qualification for the Champions League.

PSG Finally Crowned French Champions https://prostinternational.com/2019/04/22/psg-finally-crowned-french-champions/ Mon, 22 Apr 2019 14:56:35 +0000 https://www.prostinternational.com/?p=213556 Last night, long standing favorites PSG have officially been crowned champions of France after second place Lille were held goalless. PSG then beat Monaco 3-1 with a hat trick from world cup winner Kylian Mbappe making it the perfect night to celebrate their title win.

After a string of first time losses their last few matches including a 5-1 loss against Lille, the clubs heaviest defeat since June 2011 and since Qatari investors took over the club. The club also lost against Nantes 3-2 causing fans and the media to think the French side no longer cared after their champions league defeat.

The Parc Des Princes stadium and the PSG players made a point to pay tribute to Notre Dame following the fire that partially destroyed the historical Parisian Cathedral.

The match also marked the return of the most expensive player in the world who had been out with a metatarsal injury since January.

“We always feel the same happiness and pride when we win a title as prestigious as the French Championship. Ligue 1 is the flagship event of a triumphant country at the top of the football world last summer. To say this is enough to point out the great importance we will always give to the titles won in this very great football nation of France. “  Nasser Al-Khelaifi, PSG owner said.

PSG have won the title for the sixth time in seven season and the Parisian team could win the domestic double if they win the French Cup final against Rennes.

Carlos Vinicius makes his full debut and rewards Monaco with three points against Lille https://prostinternational.com/2019/03/15/carlos-vinicius-makes-his-full-debut-and-rewards-monaco-with-three-points-against-lille/ Fri, 15 Mar 2019 22:14:22 +0000 https://www.prostinternational.com/?p=211910 Carlos Vinicius who made his full debut against Lille scored his first Monaco goal and the match winner in the 90th minute of the game to keep the French side’s survival hopes alive.

The win moves Monaco a point off FC Nantes in 15th while the three points gained make it 15 points in eight games for Leonardo Jardim since he has returned as manager. They also moved seven points away from Dijon in 18th, strengthen their chances of Ligue 1 survival.

The first chance of the game came in the seventh minute as Portuguese winger Rony Lopes forced Lille goalkeeper Mike Maignan into a comfortable save early on.

Though the first effort would be the closest the away side came for some time as they had to endure a whole host of nail-biting moments including winger Jonathan Bamba hitting the crossbar ten minutes into the game.

Maignan in the Lille net had to be very careful six minutes later as a deflection off of captain Jose Fonte meant that Gelson Martins shot fell straight at the feet of the French keeper but had the touch been more solid then it could have been a whole different story.

VAR had to be used in the 36th minute as Monaco striker Vinicius was fouled millimetres away from the penalty area. In the end, a free-kick was given and it never challenged the home side.

Controversy in the later stages of the first half saw Jemerson stay on the pitch, the centre-back was booked in the 6th minute but fouled Lille winger Nicolas Pepe in the box, usually, a penalty is given but referee Hakim Ben El Hadj gave a corner and decided against booking him.

Had Jemerson been booked it would have been his second red card in four games, the Brazilian had only just returned from his three-game suspension after playing Montpellier.

Two late chances in the first half almost gave the hosts the lead as Bamba volleyed the ball over before club top scorer Pepe forced Monaco keeper Danijel Subasic into a fingertip save.

Coming out in the second half Jardim’s side came out the better of the two and three minutes after coming out for the second 45, they created the first chance of the second half.

This chance came as Russian midfielder Aleksandr Golovin made Maignan make a comfortable save as the keeper looked to keep his 12th clean sheet of the Ligue season, moments later Martins had the keeper stretching really far down to deny the Portugues winger.

Rafael Leão’s effort in the 59th minute symbolised a lot of Lille’s problems, they were having plenty of chances but not challenging Subasic. The striker could have squared the ball to a teammate and got a much different result.

With twenty minutes to go it was goal-less despite a combined total of 18 shots between the two, the away side Monaco were testing Maignan more as the keeper had to make seven saves up to this point.

Luiz Araujo made an impact on the game but it wasn’t the impact that manager Christophe Galtier expected when he brought the substitute on as the Brazilian wasted a number of chances for the hosts.

Jonathan Ikoné should have put Lille one goal up in the 85th minute as Araujo cross was dangerous however Ikone fluffed his touch and in the end, meant that the chance ended the way so many had on the night for the hosts.

They would rue all those missed chances as Monaco striker Vinicius managed to win the match in the 90th minute with his first goal since arriving in January from Napoli, Jean Eudes Aholou clipped the ball into the box before the Brazilian chested it down and beat Maignan in the Lille net.

Monaco face tough test against second placed Lille https://prostinternational.com/2019/03/14/monaco-face-tough-test-against-second-placed-lille/ Thu, 14 Mar 2019 10:33:37 +0000 https://www.prostinternational.com/?p=211690 Both Lille and Monaco go into this tie with the real need for all three points, the hosts Lille hope to continue their pursuit for Champions League football for the first time since the 2014-2015 campaign.

As for Monaco, they are in a battle they didn’t even expect to be in, last season the Monegasque side finished second behind only Paris Saint-Germain. The away side today are a whole 53 points off of their entire total from last season and European football is almost impossible.

Now Leonardo Jardim’s side are in a relegation battle after he came and went with former club legend Thierry Henry struggling in the same post. Despite his status in the game, he only picked up five wins in 20 games. The French side have picked up 12 points in seven games since their former manager rejoined.

Last time the two met the match ended 0-0 with striker Radamel Falcao missing a penalty for the then hosts Monaco.

Lille are unbeaten in their last five matches, during that time they have beaten St Etienne and Dijon FCO 1-0 while also beating EA Guingamp 2-0. The two draws were against Montpellier and Strasbourg.

As for the away side Monaco they have been flying recently they remain unbeaten in the last six, getting an impressive win over Lyon who are third in Ligue 1, as well as beating Nantes and Toulouse.

Christophe Galtier acknowledged that Monaco have improved since the January transfer window:

“The first half of the season they have 14 points in 19 games. They now have gained 13 points in 9 games. Monaco are not the same team: they are good dynamic. We can find the characteristics of Leonardo Jardim’s team in the game. They will be a difficult side to face, as there strengths are with their offensive play. We will have to come out a perform if we are to win in this match.”

Jardim spoke to the media on the severity of this match:

“All future games will be tough, we have to be physically and mentally ready and our goal is to win.”

“We are going to face the second best team in France. They have a great attack, a very fast quartet, they are able to open the gaps easily. We need to build up in the game, play our football.”

“We will have players suspended for the next two games, which will be an opportunity for those who have less time to play.”

The hosts have only one injury going into this match, defender Jeremy Pied is the only absentee as he will miss out with a groin injury.

Jardim’s side could be without a total of three players as Kevin N’Koudou and Willem Geubbels are doubts while Pele will miss the match through suspension.

Ivory Coast born winger Pépé has enjoyed a breakthrough season scoring 18 in 31 matches for the Les Dogues. He is also the leading assister for the North of France side as he has set up someone on 11 different occasions.

Colombian forward and club captain Falcao has been the leading example in the goalscoring department, he has netted 13 in 31 matches for the Les Rouges et Blancs and has scored four since Jardim was reappointed as manager.

Theirry Henry sacked as AS Monaco boss as Leonardo Jardim is reappointed https://prostinternational.com/2019/01/25/theirry-henry-sacked-as-as-monaco-boss-as-leonardo-jardim-is-reappointed/ Fri, 25 Jan 2019 21:05:31 +0000 https://www.prostinternational.com/?p=208552 Theirry Henry has been sacked by AS Monaco. The former Monaco attacker lasted just three months in the dugout before being let go.

This was the Frenchman’s first stint as manager after being the assistant to Roberto Martinez with the Belgium national side for almost two years.

Henry, 41, replaced title-winning manager Leonardo Jardim on October 13, after the club sat third from bottom of in Ligue 1.

At the time Jardim had only won one league game, beating FC Nantes 3-1 on their opening match of the season, while the 41-year-old’s record was slightly better winning two of his twelve league matches. Those wins both came on the road as they beat SC Amiens and SM Caen.

Monaco announced via a statement on the club’s website that their former player had been suspended, it read:

“AS Monaco announces that it has decided to suspend its duties as coach of the first team Thierry Henry from this day and waiting for a final decision.

Franck Passi will train the professional group this Friday.”

Passi, 52, has been the caretaker manager of both Marseille and Lille, taking over as interim boss of the earlier side twice as an interim boss the Bergerac born man managed to win 12 matches from a possible 29. Drawing seven and losing ten.

Jardim was announced to take over from the former Monaco boss, he joins on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The France World Cup winner had made radical changes to the team, dropping major senior faces in favour of promoting the youth and leaves the 2017 Ligue 1 champions in a worsened condition than when he joined with the side one point ahead of bottom-placed En Avant de Guingamp.

Henry had come under scrutiny after the language he used to insult Strasbourg defender Kenny Lala during his side’s 5-1 defeat on Saturday, the boss has since apologised for his actions saying:

“Yes, I regret these words,” the Frenchman added “It’s not the first time, sometimes I do it in English. I just reacted, I’m sorry, yes, but I’m only human.”

The former Arsenal star never got the opportunity to face off against 18th place Dijon FCO, a game that is crucial in the fight to retain their Ligue 1 status.

After signing big hitters like Cesc Fabregas and Naldo, the principality cannot afford to be playing Ligue 2 football for the first time since the 2012-2013 season.

Can Fabregas save Monaco? https://prostinternational.com/2019/01/14/can-fabregas-save-monaco/ Mon, 14 Jan 2019 13:36:54 +0000 https://www.prostinternational.com/?p=207884 On Sunday in Ligue 1 the most important match was certainly between Olympic de Marseille and Monaco. Although the match ended 1-1 with both teams splitting the points, another highlight was the newest recruit made by the Principality.

Cesc Fabregas signed a three year deal this week and joined former Arsenal teammate turned Monaco manager Thierry Henry to attempt to save Monaco from relegation. Fabregas played the full 90 minutes in the stalemate and boss Henry was happy to see his signing making his first minutes stating:

“Cesc evolved with the game. Minute after minute, he started to put his hand on the game and take that break.”

It is no secret Henry’s Monaco have been struggling in Ligue 1 this year – those struggles are what led the former Monaco youngster to take up the reigns after Leonardo Jardim was sacked in October, but could his former teammate be the start of comeback for the principality?

After the announcement of his signing Fabregas tweeted,

“Wow. I’m honoured to announce that I will be starting an exciting journey with this wonderfully historic club,” Fàbregas tweeted. “AS Monaco will be my home for the next 3.5 years, and I cannot wait to start this new challenge.”

Image: Instagram Cesc Fabregas

After a successful four years at Chelsea which include two premiere league titles, one FA cup and one League cup Fabregas left a lasting imprint on Chelsea and the Premiere League as a whole. Chelsea posted an official message on their website,

“We thank Cesc for his wonderful service and wish him the very best of luck for the next chapter in what has been a fantastic career. There is no doubt Fàbregas’s place in the Chelsea history books is assured given his achievements over the past four-and-a-half seasons.”

With such an impact on the Premiere League, Henry is hoping the same thing will happen and that the Fabregas effect will work for Monaco as well. Monaco are currently 17th in Ligue 1 and are doing everything to avoid relegation.

Hoddle was in a critical condition when the ambulance came that day, with sound engineer Simon Daniels having to use CPR in a move that may have saved the 61-year-old’s life.

BT Sports cancelled their Score show, which is broadcast every Saturday, the show that the former footballer was set to star on as the initial shock set in set in.

Upcoming Caen game could be crucial for Monaco’s Thierry Henry experiment https://prostinternational.com/2018/11/13/upcoming-caen-game-could-be-crucial-for-monacos-thierry-henry-experiment/ Tue, 13 Nov 2018 14:47:25 +0000 https://www.prostinternational.com/?p=203748 Every manager’s dream job would be a former club or a national side but for many, this can be a poison chalice. If Thierry Henry cannot turn AS Monaco’s form around this could be the later for him.

Henry – As a player

Henry started his footballing career off for the Ligue 1 side at the age of 17 losing in their 2-0 loss to Nice.
However, he eventually made a name for himself at the club by his third season in Ligue 1, the 1996-1997 season which saw them win the title.

He also made his debut for his national side at the tender age of 20, since then the former Sky Sports pundit has succeeded as a player at Juventus, Arsenal and FC Barcelona.

On July 16, the attacker announced that he was ready to be a manager following a period as assistant manager to Roberto Martinez at Belgium who finished third at the World Cup in Russia. Within three months, Henry had gone full circle and completed his first move into management rejoining AS Monaco but so far it hasn’t gone to plan for the former player.

This isn’t completely his fault as when a club is as big as a part of someone’s history as was the case with the Hnery, then it would be difficult for him to turn this offer down. The timing of becoming the head coach wouldn’t be the best time as Monaco were third from bottom of the French first tier and had just sacked arguably their best coach in recent history Leonardo Jardim.

Jardim who won the Ligue 1 back in the 2016/2017, had been operating under difficult circumstances though as 13 of the 28 title-winning squad members had been sold with the core attackers and midfielders being sold on for a profit. At the time of his joining Monaco, Henry’s side had only won once all season in all competitions. They had six points from nine games losing five of those.

Injury Woes

If the task wasn’t already difficult for the 41-year-old, then injuries have really hurt this side as six key players are out. Danijel Subašić, the club’s number one has been in and out of the squad with the same hamstring injury he suffered at the World Cup.

Other key players such as Steven Jovetic, Rony Lopes, Kamil Glik and Youri Tielemans are all out at the moment along with new signing Aleksandr Golovin who joined from CSKA Moscow after a great World Cup for Russia. These injuries have led to many issues including lack of stability in the starting 11.

The keeper scenario is a huge glaring problem as Diego Benaglio just isn’t as good as Subašić. The Swiss has played 15 matches for the ‘Les Rouges et Blancs’ conceding 28 which is already over half the number that Monaco’s injured number one had done the entirety of last season.

These numbers have been achieved by having the same players in defenders, though you could argue that there is less cover for the back-line now that Fabinho and João Moutinho have moved to England.

Lack of goals has been a pressing issue as well as having key attackers Lopes and Jovetic both out with injury at the moment, means their captain and striker Radamel Falcao isn’t getting the service he needs.

At the age of 32 ‘El Tigre’ is starting to lack mobility and because of this Monaco need to be direct to get the same sort of numbers out of their star man. He scored 24 in 36 last season while this year he’s only netted four.

Formation Problems and unrealistic expectations

Henry has employed four different formations this season and hasn’t gone with the same one for more than a match. This hasn’t helped the consistency of the squad. This team still doesn’t know what style their manager is trying to go for. The side is currently 19th in Ligue 1 with seven points only ahead of EA Guingamp on goal difference.

The boardroom at Monaco could already be thinking of axing their former star from his head coach role after only 31 days in the job. Crazier things have happened, but the problem was that Henry was expected to get a side out of relegation without any prior experience that is why they are struggling.

Henry has lost two games out of the six by 4-0 so confidence hasn’t been great. Two of those games involve red cards to his side, which doesn’t help.

When you are losing games and unsure of who is playing next to you, players often forget the basics like discipline because the thought process slows down a little. If Henry cannot directly control the stability of his line up, it’s a matter of going back to basics and that is something that will have to be done in their next game against relegation rivals Caen, or Monaco could suffer the ultimate price for their naivety.

Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Neymar had put them in the clear before a late penalty consolation or the visitors scored by Nicolas Pepe.

The win took PSG to a maximum 36 points from 12 games, 11 ahead of Lille now in third and Montepellier above them on goal difference, as 47,549 watched on at the Parc des Princes. The nationalities of the PSG starting XI read like a who’s who of world football, France, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain and Belgium, with Mbappe the only Frenchman.

At 19 years, 10 months and 13 days, he became the youngest player to reach 40 Ligue 1 goals since 1973.

It was their fifth straight win over Lille. and they set a new record for the best start ever to one of Europe’s top five leagues, beating the 11 wins set by double winning Tottenham Hotspur in 1960/61.

PSG have scored 41 goals in the 12 matches conceding just seven. 27 of those are second half goals.

Juventus with ten wins and a draw come closest among the bigger leagues but PSV Eindhoven can match the with 11 straight wins and a goal difference of 39-4. PSV though had seven Dutch starters in their 1-0 win over Vitesse at the weekend.

UEFA CL Group C Table Team GP W D L F A GD Pts

4  Red Star Belgrade 3 0 1 2 1 10 -9 1

On Tuesday though, PSG play one of their most important games of the year when they visit Napoli in the Champions League. The southern Italians are a point ahead of them and left France with a 2-2 draw in the opening match between the two. It could have been worse for PSG as they need a stoppage time Angel Di Maria goal to take even a point and a Mario Rui own goal to equalise the first time.

Napoli also have group punch bags Red Star at home to come while PSG host Liverpool.

So for all the suave and ease with which they are strolling to the Ligue Un title, critics may be sharpening their knives to judge PSG’s season a failure as early as Wednesday morning.
