Prost – Prost International [PINT] https://prostinternational.com The International Division of Prost Soccer Wed, 01 May 2024 22:30:19 +0000 en-GB hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.2 https://prostinternational.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Templogo2-150x150.png Prost – Prost International [PINT] https://prostinternational.com 32 32 Jon Batham: England squad contains few surprises but is “probably sensible” https://prostinternational.com/2024/04/30/jon-batham-england-squad-contains-few-surprises-but-is-probably-sensible/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 19:57:34 +0000 http://prostinternational.com/?p=290069

The T20 World Cup begins in Dallas on June 1st when hosts USA face local rivals Canada.

England are among those who have already declared their squad but reaction to England’s provisional squad provisional squad for the T20 World Cup set to take place in the USA and West Indies this June has beem muted rather than enthusiastic or negative.

Speaking exclusively to Prost, author, writer and broadcaster Jon Batham reviewed England’s T20 squad selection.

This squad contains few surprises and it is probably sensible to have a nucleus of the team which won the last World Cup 18 months ago.

However, for Buttler to be captain after the shambles of the ODI World Cup defence is far from inspiring.

It is to be hoped Phil Salt will be given the gloves because for Buttler to be captain, wicketkeeper and opener is asking too much of any mortal.

While we’re on the subject of wicketkeepers for Rob Key to state Salt and Bairstow can stake a claim for the wicketkeeping gloves in the summer’s Test through performances in this tournament is simply another slap in the face for Ben Foakes.

England’s wicketkeeper in Tests should not even be up for debate.

The punt on Archer’s fitness feels like one England had to take on a player with real stardust. Fingers crossed it comes off and more importantly Archer comes through unscathed.

The omission of Dawid Malan while widely predicted appears harsh given his record. It also makes no sense to end a player’s international career just months after giving him another central contract.

It’s not as if the sport’s overseers have money to burn. It’s not the first time Malan has been treated shabbily by England’s hierarchy, but he’s not the first to suffer that fate.

Nor I fear will he be the last.

More squads are announced

Archer back but Lancashire, Surrey and Yorkshire provide 11 of England’s 15 man T20 squad https://prostinternational.com/2024/04/30/three-counties-dominate-englands-15-man-t20-squad/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 18:41:29 +0000 http://prostinternational.com/?p=290055 Defending champions England have named their provisional squad for the T20 World Cup set to take place in the USA and West Indies this June.

Jos Buttler will captain the side but perhaps the most eye catching name is 29-year-old pace bowler Jofra Archer, who has been cleared after a stress fracture in his right elbow that plagued him for more than four years.

England will play four warm-up games against Pakistan next month and the announced squad is the provisional selection for the tournament that starts on 1 June in the West Indies and the United States.

Archer was born in Bridgetown, Barbados and would be delighted to perform there where England face both Scotland and Australia.

England also play Oman and Namibia.

The paceman has appeared in only 14 of England’s 65 T20s over the last four years due to injury and the news will prove to be an enormous boost for England fans.

In an experienced squad, Tom Hartley and Will Jacks are the only players who have not previously played in either the T20 or ODI World Cup.

Only seven of England’s 18 counties are represented in the 15 man squad with Surrey and Lancashire providing four players each.

Yorkshire provide three more meaning just three counties account for 11 of the 15 playing squad.

Moeen Ali (Warwickshire), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Mark Wood (Durham) and Archer, nominally a Sussex player make up the remainder.

Lecisetershire’s Rehan Ahmed looks to be the most notable omission.

The full squad is:

Jos Buttler (Lancashire, capt), Moeen Ali (Warwickshire), Jofra Archer (Sussex), Jonathan Bairstow (Yorkshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Sam Curran (Surrey), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Tom Hartley (Lancashire), Will Jacks (Surrey), Chris Jordan (Surrey), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Phil Salt (Lancashire), Reece Topley (Surrey), Mark Wood (Durham).

New Zealand were the first team to announce their 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Kane Williamson (c), Finn Allen, Trent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee. Travelling Reserve: Ben Sears

The Kiwis face Afghanistan, West Indies, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, in a group they should be confident about.

South Africa have selected the following:

Aiden Markram (c), Ottniel Baartman, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, Tristan Stubbs

Their group includes Sri Lanka, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Nepal and looks to be one of the tricker challanged facing a test playing nation.

Usain Bolt becomes T20 World Cup Ambassador https://prostinternational.com/2024/04/23/usain-bolt-becomes-t20-ambassador/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 18:33:41 +0000 https://prostinternational.com/?p=290036 Jamaican world record holding sprinter Usain Bolt knows a winner when he sees one. Today he was unveiled as an ambassador for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Bolt holds the 100m sprint World Record at 9.58 seconds and is an eight-time Olympic gold medallist.

As Major League Cricket gears up for its launch, the Jamaican believes cricket can prosper in America on the back of co-hosting this year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and a successful foray back into the Olympics in 2028.

Like most West Indians, Bolt grew up playing cricket on the Caribbean Island of Jamaica and only turned his attention to athletics when urged to try track and field events by his cricket coach in high school.

Describing his love for cricket, his cricketing memories, and how big the upcoming event in the West Indies and USA can be, he said:

“I am thrilled to be an ambassador for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

“Coming from the Caribbean where Cricket is a part of life, the sport has always held a special place in my heart, and I am honoured to be part of such a prestigious tournament.

“I look forward to bringing my energy and enthusiasm to the World Cup and contributing to the growth of cricket globally.”

A long-time friend of West Indies great Chris Gayle, Bolt said he was looking forward to playing a part in the tournament that will run in the USA and Caribbean from June 1-29.

The athlete expects to see the party atmosphere in full force in the Caribbean – with ‘fans enjoying the dancing, music and high-energy’ atmosphere it is renowned for but he is also keen to see how much of an impact cricket can make in its first major venture into the American market with venues in Florida, New York and Texas.

As an avid watcher of American sports, Bolt expects cricket to thrive in its new surroundings and thinks there is every chance the sport can make a long-term impact in the market on the back of a successful T20 World Cup.

“America believes a lot in sport and high intensity and for me to get into that market is big,” he suggested.

“When they follow a sport, they follow a sport properly and they go all in and I feel like if they can crack into it, they will get into it the right way

“If we bring energy like I know we will for the T20 (World Cup) it is going to be wonderful.”

And Bolt expects further inroads to be made in 2028 when cricket makes its return to the Summer Olympics for the first time since it appeared at the Games of the II Olympiad in Paris back in 1900.

“If you listen to NBA players and the way they talk about winning a gold medal, they have won NBA titles, they have their rings, but they are like ‘we went to the Olympics’,” Bolt noted.

“The other day I watched the documentary about how they (USA basketball team) lost (at the 2004 Olympics) and there was a Redeem Team (at the Beijing Games in 2008) and the focus and the hard work (they needed to win).

“That is how big (important) getting a gold medal is. Every sport tries to get into the Olympics because it is such a big thing and it is such a great feeling to be on a podium winning that gold medal.”

Prost Soccer accredited for World Cup finals in Qatar https://prostinternational.com/2022/10/04/prost-at-the-world-cup/ Tue, 04 Oct 2022 14:07:54 +0000 https://www.prostinternational.com/?p=286204

David at Wembley Stadium for the Wrexham v Bromley FA Trophy Final in May 2022

Prost International and its sister site Prost Amerika are delighted to report that we have obtained accreditation to cover this winter’s World Cup finals as an international media outlet.

Journalist David Collins will be reporting from Qatar with Group B his primary focus. England, Wales the USA and Iran meet there.

However he will also report on Canada and Mexico as the two North American sides seek to replicate CONCACAF’s impressive showing eight years ago.

Cardiff-based writer David has covered club games involving Cardiff City, Newport County, Swansea City and Wrexham for Prost in recent years as Wales Correspondent as well as reporting on the fortunes of Robert Page’s international XI and Gemma Grainger’s Women’s team.

David told us:

“I’m thrilled that FIFA have confirmed my place as an accredited media representative in Qatar.

“I have enjoyed some terrific times reporting for Prost, covering international fixtures, club encounters across Wales & the West Country and even a Wembley cup final. It’s an amazing site to write for.

“Qatar will be a wholly different experience though.

“Aside from the football, I’m especially looking forward to participating in a worldwide sporting event from a media perspective. It will be a terrific insight into the world of the mass media.

“It is fabulous recognition and I am truly grateful not only to my colleagues on Prost International but to all those past and present in the USA and Canada  on Prost Amerika who helped build the site to this defining moment.”

Prost Amerika began in 2006 at Seattle’s Qwest Field (now Lumen Field) with just a pen and a notepad when Seattle Sounders were in the USL

Prost founder and owner Steve Clare said:

“I am delighted firstly for David. His twin passions are for Welsh football and for journalism. This is a day he has long dreamt of, but never thought he would see.

“Moreso, I want to thank all those who have travelled with us from our humble beginnings in the USL in Seattle, through becoming a Cascadian site to nationwide MLS coverage. We have had some magnificent writers and photographers.

“This moment is a tribute to each and every one of them.

“I also want to thank our university partners in England and Wales for helping grow Prost International at such an incredible rate.”

David will primarily be reporting on Group B but he will cover the tournament as a whole as the eyes of the world focus on Qatar.

As an experienced and respected figure in the Welsh media, he has contributed to a number of websites, hard copy publications and digital platforms. His media appearances include TV and radio work, including BBC Wales, alongside a lively social media presence @DavidCollins29a.

Aside from his work with Prost, he is the author of several books on Welsh football and other aspects of social and cultural life.

Prost is known for its commitment to inclusivity. That comittment takes many forms.

Recently David began CymraegProst, a Welsh language twitter account, and he will be populating that account with updates from Qatar to accompany his live tweets and articles in English as the World Cup drama unfolds.

In addition, Prost will be offering to share its content with any Welsh language outlet to ensure Welsh speakers benefit as much as is possible from his presence there.

Prost Soccer is grateful to the Football Association of Wales for supporting our representation in Qatar. They have been a model football association in terms of welcoming and assisting smaller media to promote their club and national sides.

Danish Manchester United fans think again after Thomas Frank’s Brentford thump Red Devils https://prostinternational.com/2022/08/19/danish-man-u-fans-think-again-after-franks-brentford-thump-united/ Fri, 19 Aug 2022 18:42:11 +0000 https://www.prostinternational.com/?p=285281

There is an old joke that the way to save the planet is to reduce the carbon footprint by playing Manchester United’s home games in London. To be fair, it’s mostly told by Londoners who support their local sides and the claim could be equally true of Liverpool.

Both Northwest clubs have massive worldwide supports and this is as true in Denmark as it is anywhere else. However recently, another club has come to the forte in EPL mad Denmark. That club is of course Brentford FC, whose Viking DNA has been on the increase since Dane Thomas Frank arrived as manager.

Not only has Frank taken the Middlesex club to its most successful era in recent history, he has imported several of his fellow countrymen to assist the cause. Danish internationals Mathias Jensen, Mikkel Damsgaard, Mads Bech Sørensen, Mathias Jørgensen and Christian Nørgaard play for the Bees, while Luka Racic and Mads Roerslev have played for Denmark at every age level except the senior team.

Naturally this has peaked the interest of Danish fans, who have no shortage of access to the top English division on their various cable and online outlets.

The Bees have turned into one of the most exciting sides that the Premier League has to offer, particularly after they thumped United 4-0 last weekend at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Danish journalist Kristian Porse spoke to Prost International on how Frank’s side have captivated the interest of football fans from the Scandinavian country.

“I think in the last couple of years, there has definitely been a lot of interest because of the Danish players and also Thomas Frank, the head coach.

“And especially when Christian Eriksen went there last season in the spring, the interest got higher, so it’s big.”

Frank has been at the helm at Brentford since 2018, having previously managed his country’s youth sides and Brondby in the Danish top flight. He initially started as an assistant head coach there in 2016 but when Dean Smith left, Frank took charge.

The 48-year-old soon guided Brentford back to the top tier of English football, and did well to maintain their status in the Premier League thanks to an impressive 2021/22 campaign.

Such success has allowed him to make a good impression on those back home in Denmark.

“It’s very good from the Danish side, and I think also from the English side. The feeling is very good.

“He didn’t have that much success when he was a coach in the Danish league, but he definitely showed himself in England and he is respected in Denmark now.”

There is plenty of interest in the Premier League from Danish fans and with Manchester United being one of the world’s biggest clubs, there are bound to be Danes who support the Red Devils.

A hefty defeat away at Brentford ensured the continuation of their poor start to the new season, having lost 2-1 at home to Brighton on the opening weekend of fixtures prior to the thrashing last Saturday. Former Bee Eriksen signed for United this summer, and it is fair to say his return to west London was far from what he had hoped for.

Kristian spoke on the reaction of their fans after the loss, with United currently sitting rock bottom of the Premier League table.

“I think right now Manchester United, which is a very supported team in Denmark, the fans are very devastated and the result last Saturday was, I think, the final thing for many of them.

“I think many of them are ‘enough is enough’, the season is new and the hope is already gone for many fans. It was a devastating result for many.”

There is a sense of optimism surrounding Brentford at the moment after their opening two results, a stark contrast to the situation at Old Trafford.

Frank’s side travel to Fulham on Saturday for a west London derby on matchday three of the Premier League, whilst Erik ten Hag’s United host arch rivals Liverpool, a clash that will see either one of the giants of English football go winless in their first three fixtures of the season come full-time.

Former England international Paul Parker is the fifth and latest columnist to sign up for Prost International.

Paul played 19 times for England, representing them in the 1990 World Cup finals in Italy. He famously provided the assist for Gary Lineker’s goal in the semi-final against Germany.

At club level he won the first ever Premier League, winning two EPL titles overall. With Manchester United, he also won the FA Cup, the League Cup and the Charity Shield. While starring in Sir Alex Ferguson’s side that won the inaugural Premier league, he started 31 EPL games and even scored a goal in a 4-1 win over Spurs.

He won the FA Cup in 1994 at Wembley against Chelsea. Before that, he was a legend in West London, playing 153 games for Fulham and 125 for QPR.

The former defender is still a welcome guest at both clubs, working for their TV stations and broadcasting to their fanbase regularly. He is among a select group who receive a warm welcome at both London rivals.

He has also written a blog on Eurosport.

[See: Paul Parker:  https://web.archive.org/web/20140808014657/https://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/blogs/paul-parker/qatar-2022-farce-could-destroy-football-know-142332266.html]

Given his broadcasting work however, Paul will become Prost International’s first ever vlogger, recording his views directly to camera.

Paul said:

“I am absolutely thrilled to be part of Prost International’s platform, especially to become their first ever vlogger.

“It’s a new journey for both me and them as I’ve never done this before. Learning together is an integral part of any sport and I love a challenge.

“Opinions on TV these days can be a little sanitised but this opportunity gives me the ability to speak directly to fans on matters affecting England and club football in the game I love.

“I’ve met Prost International journalists at a few games and know their dedication to independent coverage.

“Also their commitment to giving opportunities to aspiring journalists is very rare in the industry these days but I was especially impressed with their social commitment and their involvement in the project to give society’s least privileged children a chance to go to University.

“No other site is doing anything close to that, so it feels like I’m working for a site also gives back to the game.”

Paul joins journalist Glenn Moore, cricket writer Annie Chave, talkSPORT’s EFL analyst Kartik Krishnaiyer, and educator/author/journalist Chris Lepkowski in the Prost International columnist stable.

His first vlog will appear on August 15 and look at the prospects for Manchester United, Chelsea, QPR and Fulham.

This week, Glenn Moore looks back on the EUROs and asks is women’s football the new men’s football or the new cricket?

Chris Lepkowski is the latest columnist to sign up for Prost International.

Chris has over a quarter century experience writing about sport after initially starting out as a journalist for the Bromsgrove Messenger/Advertiser before moving to Haymarket’s Motoring News in 1998 as a national racing correspondent. He later joined Autosport.com, being one of the first multi-media journalists within that sector.

From there Chris moved on to football joining FourFourTwo.com, being one of just three full-time staff members on the football magazine’s all-new all-singing-all-dancing website.

A move back to the Midlands saw Chris take up a role on the Birmingham Mail sports desk and the iconic Sports Argus title, primarily as the West Bromwich Albion reporter, while also filling in for others.

At that time, he covered characters such as Trevor Francis, Graham Taylor, Steve Bruce, Gary Megson, Bryan Robson and Glenn Hoddle were pounding the West Midlands’ technical areas. As the decade evolved, he embraced the shift from working as a traditional newspaper reporting into multi-media journalism.

In 2014, Chris took a step out of journalism to take a role as head of media & content at West Bromwich Albion for a little under two years. He subsequently worked as communications manager for a politician and a multi-national firm, while working matchdays freelancing for the national press including the Sunday Times, Times, Daily Star and Mirror.

In more recent times he has contributed to The Blizzard, FourFourTwo, When Saturday Comes and written two books, with the third book, ghosting the autobiography of a footballer, among his projects.

He has also guested on Turkish TV, Arabic media, BBC WM, BBC Midlands Today and been a contributor to, and host of, football podcasts.

He joined Birmingham City University as lecturer in sports journalism in 2019, before taking over as course director in 2021.

Chris said:

“I am absolutely thrilled to be part of Prost International’s platform – one that not only offers a potential pathway for the journalists of tomorrow, but gives a platform to those of us who should know better.

“At BCU we instil an ethos that our young undergraduates are journalists studying at university, rather than being university undergraduates who happen to be studying journalism.

“I’ve worked in communications. I’ve worked on the front line of a Premier League football club and fought fires for a prominent politician, but the most rewarding experiences in my career have been as a journalist news-gathering and breaking stories. There is no better thrill than delivering new information to an engaged audience.

“I have been privileged to serve during a time when the industry underwent a shift from traditional newspaper journalism into multi-media practice – where reporters not only became digital, audio and broadcast practitioners, but also embraced social media and became brands in their own right.

“I can only endorse Prost International for creating networking and opportunities into what I still believe is the best industry in the world: journalism.”

He joins Glenn Moore, cricket writer Annie Chave and broadcaster Kartik Krishnaiyer in the Prost International stable.

Annie Chave is a cricket journalist and broadcaster.

She has been commentating on International Cricket via Guerilla Cricket for the past five years  – a gig which led to working for Line & Length Network live from the Barbados Kensington Oval in January 2019 for the West Indies v England.

In November 2019 she helped set up a quarterly magazine, County Cricket Matters.

She became the magazine’s Editor and Director in March 2020, and it has just published its 11th issue. In 2021, on the back of the magazine’s success, she started a County Cricket Natters podcast with regular livestream/BBC broadcasters, Sam Dalling and Dan Whiting.

She is the Cricket Supporters’ Association Somerset County Cricket Club Representative, and is also a Trustee for Googly Fund a fantastic initiative, giving grants to friendly cricket teams.

Recently Annie’s passionate support for the county game saw her inadvertently thrust into the spotlight when former England international Kevin Pietersen launched an unprovoked personal attack on Twitter.

While Annie responded with grace and courtesy, the South African’s tweet only increased her outreach and public awaress of County Matters.

Annie has written articles for the Cricketer, including book reviews. She has also appeared on numerous podcasts and written for many blogs.

“I was delighted when Prost International invited me to join their columnist team. Their commitment to covering the county game at this crucial time is vital; especially as they are a multi-sports site that covers other sports along with the counties. That’s a good ally to have.”

“To them, county cricket matters.

“Best of all, the nearly all the journalists they send to the county grounds are young with their writing careers in front of them. Prost is creating the next generation of county cricket writers. This is very important.

It also turned out some of my older colleagues already working in cricket journalism knew of Prost and had very good things to say. Personally I’m also excited to have a new platform to put the case for the cricket causes I believe in.”

Annie is the third guest to join our columnist series; following Glenn Moore and Kartik Krishnaiyer, whose pieces appeared on June 13th and June 20th. Her first column will appear on Monday June 27th.

Broadcaster and author Kartik Krishnaiyer becomes PINT’s second guest columnist https://prostinternational.com/2022/06/17/kartik-krishnaiyer-becomes-pints-second-guest-columnist/ Fri, 17 Jun 2022 08:07:13 +0000 https://www.prostinternational.com/?p=282954

Prost International is proud to announce that author and broadcaster Kartik Krishnaiyer has agreed to become Prost International’s  second guest columnist.

He joins former Independent writer Glenn Moore who became our first columnist last week.

Kartik has written about football for over 15 years after initially serving as a press officer and communications director for multiple US-based professional soccer leagues including the NASL and clubs including the Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

He is the former “Premier League Expert” for bout.com and wrote for the London-based Sport Business from early 2018 to late 2019 on more financially themed issues.

Kartik has contributed to several newspapers as well as Howler Magazine, The Eleven and The Yanks are Coming website. Nowadays, he is best known in the USA as the Senior Writer for World Soccer Talk, a respected website which reaches almost 80,000 readers through its twitter account and other social media.

He also served as Editor of Bitter and Blue, a UK-based Manchester City fan website.

Krishnaiyer is a published author

More recently, he has been a frequent contributor on TalkSport in England, He is on air  four times a week where he discusses al maters EFL; previewing and reviewing the week’s action.

His first piece will examine the survival credentials of Fulham, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest as they seek to build on their promotion from the EFL.

An established author, he wrote “Blue with Envy” in 2014, a book about his long distance but growing relationship with Manchester City.

Two years later, he completed his second book; Soccerwarz: Inside America’s Soccer Feud Between MLS, NASL and USL.

Journalists prepared to be independent and critical of the soccer establishment were not universal in the early ‘noughties’, and Kartik and Prost Amerika found themselves frequent bedfellows fairly frequently on the wrong side of that establishment’s discontent.

A respect between Kartik, World Soccer Talk, Prost Amerika and its owner Steve Clare began then and has grown over almost two decades of watching each other progress while fiercely guarding their journalistic independence.

But, as Krishnaiyer states, it was the future as much as the past that convinced hm to join Prost:

“The number of sports journalism universities already in partnership with, and providing writers to, Prost International was a major attraction.

“I’m excited to join this team and be part of one of the youngest and most promising rosters of writers covering the sport in the English language.

“I worked closely with Steve previously at Soccerly and Prost Amerika and it’s been among the most fulfilling experiences in nearly two decades of working in and around this sport. Few have that passion for both sport and journalism that Steve balanced so well in the USA.

“But it’s not just the possibility of working alongside established and experienced journalists like Glenn Moore. Yes, I look forward to joining Prost International’s rotation of established guest columnists but also the great honor of coaching and mentoring the next generation of journalists who will now be my colleagues.

“Having been told some of the other names yet to arrive, I look forward to contributing to a publication that will feature some of the strongest independent and analytical voices in English football and other sports, both present and future.”

Since 2006, Kartik has hosted or co-hosted several podcasts about world football but this new venture will see him write for English readers for the first time in several years.

Hie inaugural article will appear on Monday June 20, 2022.

Please look out for further announcments about future columnists who will be joining our team, from the worlds of football and cricket.
