Late home game surge ends with Union’s win over Atlanta United 3-2

The jury is out:  Was the third Philadelphia Union home game against Atlanta United FC following the World Cup break exciting or just a mediocre game with a wild ending?  For Atlanta, the lessons from the 3-2 defeat could be:  1) avoid red cards; and 2) beware of slowing down the game too much, as surely the delay was a factor in the 8 minute stoppage time for the second half.  For Philadelphia, now that your newer strikers have figured out the system, play them, especially Ezekiel Alladoh.  And, given the results of the last 3 games, your players seem to like playing for Interim Coach Ryan Richter.

Atlanta’s strategy to control the game by slowing it down was evident before the major events of the game occurred.  Even in the early scoreless minutes, Atlanta took its time on goal distribution and free kicks.   Then came the 26th minute, when Atlanta’s Enea Mihaj was shown a red card for a hard challenge on Philadelphia’s Milan Iloski, despite Mihaj’s arguments to the referee to the contrary.

Going down a man early in the game is tough and surely is the harbinger of end-of-game fatigue.  Shortly after the card, however, in the 30th minute, Atlanta’s keeper Lucas Hoyos punted the ball directly to Philadelphia’s Neil Pierre.  Pierre headed the ball to Iloski, but Atlanta’s Tomas Jacob was able to redirect the ball to the former-Union player, Fafà Picault.  Picault lofted the ball to Miguel Almirón, and Philadelphia’s defense withered. Almirón went down, presumably hoping for a penalty, but that was unnecessary as the ball wobbled its way into the Philadelphia net.  Atlanta held onto its 0-1 lead when the half-time whistle blew.

Then in the 66th minute, Atlanta struck again.  Atlanta’s Tristan Muyumba artfully sent his curling shot at a distance to the right past the leaping Philadelphia’s keeper, Andre Blake.  Thus, midway through the second half, Philadelphia was in a two-goal hole.

The game, however, was not over.  In the 73rd minute, Kai Wager sent a pass from the left wing to Iloski.  The ever-crafty Iloski flicked the ball off his heal over the head of Hoyos, who had come off his line to cut down the angle.  Philadelphia had cut the lead to 1-2.

The delays that were intended to hold onto Atlanta’s lead did just the opposite.  Not only was Hoyos shown yellow for slowing his punts, but stoppage time in the second half was a whopping 8 minutes and the Union needed all 8 minutes to prevail.

In the 6th minute of stoppage time, Wagner crossed the ball right to land on the tall head of Philadelphia’s Neil Pierre.  In his second goal in three games, Pierre directed the ball downward to bounce once before landing in the left side of the Atlanta goal.
