Revolution Forced to Settle for 2-2 Draw in Fiery Clash with CF Montréal

Montréal, Québec – The New England Revolution (9-3-5, 30 pts.) battled to a 2-2 draw with CF Montréal (4-4-10, 20 pts.) on Saturday night.

The match kicked off at 7:30 p.m. ET at Stade Saputo to a crowd of 19,619.

The match began with New England patiently building out of the back and working the ball through midfield as they looked to establish possession early.

The Revolution registered the first shot of the match in the 4th minute when Peyton Miller unleashed a long-range effort, but his attempt sailed high over the crossbar.

New England threatened again in the 11th minute after a Carles Gil delivery into the penalty area was only partially cleared. The loose ball fell to Brooklyn Raines, who struck a first-time volley, but his effort drifted wide of the left post.

CF Montréal responded with their first attempt of the evening in the 13th minute when Brayan Vera tried his luck from long range, sending his effort high over the crossbar.

Less than a minute later, the hosts nearly broke the deadlock. Prince Owusu found himself with a golden opportunity from inside six yards, but his close-range effort rolled just wide of the left post, allowing the Revolution to escape an early scare.

Peyton Miller created another opportunity for New England in the 16th minute, driving down the right flank before taking on Luca Petrasso. The Revolution wingback cut inside and fired a right-footed effort toward goal, but CF Montréal goalkeeper Sebastian Breza was well-positioned to make a comfortable save.

CF Montréal responded in the 19th minute when Prince Owusu found space inside the penalty area and met a cross with his left foot, but his effort flashed just wide of the post.

The hosts continued to apply pressure two minutes later as Hennadi Synchuk tested Matt Turner from distance, though the Revolution goalkeeper was equal to the attempt and made a routine save.

New England answered almost immediately. Peyton Miller again burst down the right flank before unleashing a right-footed shot that narrowly missed the left post, capping another dangerous attacking move by the Revolution.

New England’s best chance of the opening half came in the 27th minute when Will Sands created space just outside the penalty area before unleashing a left-footed strike. His effort narrowly missed the right post, leaving the match scoreless.

Less than a minute later, in the 28th minute, New England were awarded a penalty kick after a hand-ball inside the box.

Carles Gil stepped up from the penalty spot and calmly curled his effort into the top-left corner, sending Sebastian Breza the wrong way to give the Revolution a 1-0 lead.

CF Montréal nearly responded in the 32nd minute when Victor Loturi drove an effort toward goal, but Matt Turner reacted sharply to palm the shot away before the danger was cleared.

Two minutes later, New England threatened to double its advantage as Matt Polster whipped a dangerous ball into the penalty area. Marcos Zambrano stretched to get on the end of it but was unable to make contact, with the delivery skimming just wide of the post.

Entering the 35th minute, New England added to their lead.

The Revolution doubled their advantage in the 35th minute. Peyton Miller burst down the right flank before squaring a low ball across the face of goal for Dor Turgeman, who made no mistake with a simple tap-in to put New England ahead 2-0.

Tempers flared in the aftermath of the goal as CF Montréal goalkeeper Sebastian Breza shoved Turgeman with both hands while the forward celebrated in front of the home supporters. Breza was subsequently shown a yellow card for his actions.

New England came inches away from adding a third goal in the 40th minute. Peyton Miller, Carles Gil, and Dor Turgeman each had efforts blocked during a frantic sequence inside the penalty area before Gil’s follow-up attempt struck the post, allowing Montréal to survive the sustained pressure.

Montreal’s next chance came in the 42nd minute when an effort towards goal by Hennaddi Synchuk was met with a diving save by goalkeeper Matt Turner.

After the initial 45+4 minutes, the match entered halftime with New England ahead 2-0.

Prior to the start of the second half, CF Montréal head coach Philippe Eullaffroy made his first change by replacing Matty Longstaff with Olger Escobar.

The second half began with CF Montréal on the front foot, as the hosts quickly advanced the ball from the center circle into New England’s defensive third in search of an early breakthrough.

Entering the 52nd minute, CF Montreal pulled one back

After receiving the ball on the right side, Brayan Vera took a touch before rifling a spectacular effort from over 30 yards into the top-left corner, leaving Matt Turner with no chance and reducing the Revolution’s advantage to 2-1.

Marcos Zambrano had a massive chance to add to New England’s lead entering the 55th minute when his left footed effort missed just to the left of the net.

Following the miss, Revolution head coach Marko Mitrović made his first change of the match by replacing Marcos Zambrano with Luca Langoni.

Marko Mitrović and the New England Revolution (9-3-5, 30 pts.) return home to face Western Conference side Houston Dynamo FC (7-1-6, 22 pts.). The match is set to kickoff at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, August 8th at 7:30 p.m. ET on MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app.
