Denver Summit 0-3 Kansas City Current
COMMERCE CITY, CO–This time of year usually saw the Rapids host the annual 4th of July match, but with them on break until July 16th, it was the Summit’s turn to host the event at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. However, they were unable to withstand the Current’s attack and ended up losing 3-0 before a crowd of 16,833 in attendance.
The scoring was opened in the 35th minute as Haley Hopkins sent a thru ball to Michelle Cooper who got in behind the defense and got the ball past Abby Smith. The Summit got a reprievetwo minutes later as Lo’eau LaBonta skied a penalty over the bar.
The Summit struggled with the long ball attack from the Current, and ultimately conceded a second goal as some sloppy defending allowed Croix Bethune to send a thru ball to Cooper once again to get her first career brace. Temwa Chawinga would get the third in the 87th minute. It was Kansas City’s second victory on the road (2-5-0) compared to their 100% record at CPKC Stadium.
The Summit slip to tenth in the NWSL table, but just a point from the playoff line. They will host Houston Dash on July 12 at 5pm MT on Victory+.
